"Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..." are three important words to every American. These three concepts are given to every person that is an American citizen through the United States Constitution; with this in mind, what are the guidelines of being a citizen when he/she does not abide by all rules and regulations given by the government onto its people? Should a person that breaks the law be given a second chance or shall his/her freedom be taken away? "Capital Punishment is punishment that takes someone's liberty and life away because they have committed a crime that other Americans can not seem to justify as being righteous. Some of these cases involve gangland killings, air piracy, drive-by shootings, and kidnapping for ransom are a few of the continuously committed crimes"(Bedau, 1999). Throughout the world there are many different views on how criminals should be treated, either with some kind of assassination or seclusion away from others. Capital Punishment is sought over many people around the world with both pros and cons on each side on the argument, but which side is right?

  • Pros and cons on each side on capital punishment

The criminal mentalty is "it is not a crime unless one gets caught" and premeditated murderers think they will not get caught. The possibilty of death penalty does not deter crime. Living a lifetime in prision is more of a punishment than ending a life. True, the killer will never kill again, once put to death, but their suffering in a cell is over once executed.

The cops arrested the guy, left the baby there alone for 6 or so hours, until a relative found out he was in jail. He was convicted and ordered to die. The cops, said, gee, sorry, we thought... I do not think that man deserves the death penalty. I do not think he deserves to be in jail. More recently an elderly grandmother was shot and killed by cops when they raided the wrong apartment in the wrong building. To be fair, those cops should be on death row.

Then there is the case where a man was sleeping and heard someone breaking into his apartment. The door was right next to his baby's bed, he grabbed his gun and fired. Unfortunately one of the shots hit a cop and the cop died. The cops had a search warrant. For the apartment next door. A couple of them walked around the back of the building. Facing the bldg from the street with a door to the left and a door to the right, only a real dumbo would break into the wrong apartment from the back.

There are some people I could probably kill with my bare hands, such as a man that shook, beat a baby, and sodomized her after she was dead. I still do not condone the death penalty. Even though I say I could kill a henious criminal, I truly could not "pull that switch". I recently read "An Innocent Man" by John Grishom. There were 4 people on death row that were railroaded there. 3 of them, did get evidentually released when DNA proved them innocent as they claimed.
