How I Chose My Career Path

(Or Not)

You don't find many young high school or college graduates begging for, or planning in advance for, a job in the field of insurance. Most people that I have spoken to claim to have gotten into the field "by accident." It just happens.

My career started right after high school. I had been working a co-op job in a pediatric dentist's office throughout my senior year, and after graduation they hired me full-time. The dentist closed the office for a week to go on vacation and, at
the time, no work meant no pay. I had a few hours worth of work every morning, bringing in the office mail and processing the insurance payments, but after that there was no immediate source of income for the week.

My grandmother's friend worked for an insurance company and told me they were hiring temps to come in and do some filing. What a mess! Weeks before, the office had received a visit from their corporate office and their "clean-up" efforts had involved boxing up all of the back-filing on everyone's desks and putting it in a closet. Out of sight, out of mind - for a very long time! They forgot it existed. The new backlog built up. You can probably figure out where this is going.

So, every day after working at my regular office I would grab a quick bite to eat and head back down in the opposite direction to file. That was it: filing.

When the dentist came back to work, things continued to go downhill. The woman I worked for was acting crazier and crazier, and I was starting to get desperate. I actually went back to the manager of the Burger King I had worked for and asked them to put me back on the schedule. Believe it! Flipping burgers really did look better than dealing with a potentially schizophrenic dentist. I gave my two-weeks notice and suffered through, wondering what on earth I was going to do next.

Thankfully, I was saved! One day before I was to start flipping burgers, the company I had been working for called, out of the blue, to ask if I wanted to come back and work for them full-time. YES! Of course, I did!

I fell into insurance by accident also. As you say, once you've learned the craft, it's hard to match the salary in other lines of work. My first love was being a school band director - it really didn't even feel like work. But then....they had more teachers than they knew what to do with. I highly recommend commercial (business) insurance to anyone making a career move into insurance. It's far more interesting and challenging than other lines - IMHO. Great job on the article!

Good article. I also found my career by accident. I don't think many people plan to work in the equipment leasing industry either. Actually I don't think many people even know there is such an industry. LOL I completely understand your worries about transitioning to something else. I made it to the top of my department and then realized...now what? Good luck finding the job that you love. :)

Interesting article. Surprisingly enough, I am one of the people who actually *wants* to work in the insurance industry. I am currently studying to be an actuary, and I already passed the first exam. The pay is supposed to be outstanding, and the math is great, too. :-)

MY dream job IS working for a schizophrenic dentist. Still got her number? Guess it's true... one man's trash...

Great article. I try not to plan too far ahead myself, but I do have some ideas in mind of where my path should take me. Of course, there are always other paths that keep popping up.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I fell into being a legal secretary quite by accident, much like you did into insurance. My manager at a Dollar General store hated me because (gasp) I filed a worker's comp claim because she injured my back! Litigation ensued and I heard an attorney in town's secretary had passed away and he was looking for someone. The rest is history. I always traded up with regard to jobs, and have done real estate, estates, domestic relations, divorce, business planning, workers' comp, social security disability... probably most fields attorneys practice (except intellectual property). Now my boss is a needy two year old.

It took me a long time to find out what I wanted to be. Am some days I am still unsure!
