I have two parakeets. A boy and girl named Cindy and Luke. Cindy is a beautiful cobalt blue bird with a dark blue chest and light blue and white wings. She has a bad attitude and is older than Luke. Luke is the color of an ice cube; a cool icy blue. He is younger, more beautiful and calmer. He loves Cindy. In fact we named him after the character of "Cool Hand Luke" from the film of the same name because he was so white and cool. We also nicknamed Luke Cindy's Boy Toy because he was younger. Whether you have parakeets, finches, or budgies you always want to buy them the latest cutest bird toy you find at Petco or Petsmart. However, buying toys for your pets can become very expensive. That is why I have found a way to save money, time, and gas by making my own food toys for my two parakeets.

Small pet birds are very intelligent, and become easily bored when not intelligently stimulated. So, make sure you rotate your thier old and new toys every two days or so. I like to change my parakeet's toys every week. The old collection of toys for one week and the new ones the next. Cindy and Luke think they have new toys every week and never get bored. I have compiled a collection of fun food toys that you can make at home so that your beloved parakeets will always be happy. Food hanging toys are a bonus for your parakeets. They can play with as well as eat the toy. Or play as they eat the toy.

1.Almond hanging toy- Thread a small needle and tie it to the end of a string to a bird-safe wooden bead. Push the needle gently but firmly through the almond. Be patient because it will take some force. Turn the almond over once the needle pushes through. Press almond down onto the needle and press it down against a pad of paper. Use a pair of pliers to push the needle all the way through to the outer edge. Continue to pile on as much as you want (15 more or whatever your preference) to make a chain so your pet birds can eat as they climb and swing.
