Ridley Scott's new Crusade epic explodes off the screen with energy. At times breathtaking, gruesome, and yet surprisingly complex this film does not shy away from the brutality of the time period. This is not a black and white picture. The heroes are very flawed (the protagonist is no Maximus) and the true villains of the piece are other Christians. Muslims worried about an unfair treatment should give a sigh of relief. If anything they are nobler than many of their Christian counterparts.

I am just shocked I didn't see Errol Flynn, Tyrone Powers, Kirk Douglas, Stewart Granger, Basil Rathbone, Charleton Heston, etc. Every cliche in the book, the mythologized figure (Saladin), pact between enemies, romance between one and his rival's lover, etc. Not mention the lack iof realism in the fact Balian is instant blacksmith, soldier, engineer, diplomat, doctor, and commander-in-chief. This film was pure tripe.

Name one crusade movie in the last 10 years. If you're saying sword and sandal pictures, yes there have been quite a few recently. But the Crusades haven't been filmed for a long long time.
