To Impeach a President

We know Vermont for gorgeous views at the turn of seasons, quaint bed and breakfasts, and real maple syrup. On March 7, 2007, more than 30 towns in Vermont took a stand that might make us think of politics before pleasure.

A grass-roots protest movement has begun in this northeastern state, calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney due to the handling of the war in Iraq. On Tuesday, citizens in 32 towns passed resolutions to impeach our president and 16 of those towns passed an additional resolution that demanded that our troops come home. These local resolutions are, of course, not binding and serve only as a symbol of the growing domestic frustration with the conflicts in Iraq. The Congress has stayed far away from this issue; impeachment is not a popular option in mainstream politics. Senator Feingold (D-WI) last year called for a censure of the president and, even that, could not find the necessary support to happen.

Even within Vermont, two towns rejected the resolution and some communities did not even consider the measure. There are no signs of support from the Vermont delegation either.

There have been nine formal attempts to impeach a United States President. Four of these resulted in articles being referred to the House of Representatives: John Tyler, Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. Of these four, only two were actually impeached by the House: Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. The Senate had not dealt with the impeachment of a president in 131 years until the impeachment of former President Clinton on articles of perjury and obstruction of justice. Before that famous case, Andrew Johnson was the last to face impeachment. He was tried for firing his secretary of war against the wishes of Congress. After a two-month trial, the Senate voted to keep him in office - by one vote. Clinton was also acquitted.

So, what does it take to impeach a president?

As for "unjustified", Iraq begged us for 12 years to do as we have done. The second thing is, the policy of the US to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq was signed into law in 1998...GWB became pres in 2001. Once terrorist regimes showed as threats...they became targets. Try, go ahead, try to convince me that Saddam Hussein and his Uday and Cusay were not terrorists.

Ms Riva, I can't even believe you said that. You wanna hear truth...join into some of the Support the Troops sites and just give a listen (read) to what they know. They are a LONG ways from as dumbed up as you make them sound. The attitudes they develop come from us. If we cannot see there good, they lose sight of it as well. Some have better leadership that can help them align, others have something different. One thing you will never be able to convince me is that our Troops are dumbed-up. Some are ready to come home, very few think it's all for nothing. But then, I lead Troops for a long time and I liked informed Troops. Informed Troops process information better than dumbed-up folk.

Melissa, that is one lieutenant. There are upwards of 140,000 in the sand box. The fact is, there will always be a case of dis-illusionment. Our Troops deserve that right. The other beauty is, a lot of people think Bush is a moron, when it comes to public speaking...I do too. That does not mean he is a moron though. So often if the "Bush is and idiot" crowd are left to their chatty ways you will soon hear them cackle on about how he devised this whole thing just to get rich...now, please, tell me, is he an idiot or a plotting scheming genious? Then too, the whole thing I spoke of the 58,000 dead in three days at Gettysburg...which free black American is not worth that work? I just cannot understand why so many of us have become so weak kneed and profusely unable to see and understand the greater good. I wonder if we had acted this way in 1861 where we would be today...?

Nice writing. I think the point of the impeachment movement is not so much to actually impeach the president (since we know how difficult this is) but to strongly voice resistance to those in power. I admire and applaud that nerve. We need more of it. I wrote an article recently about how we need more of this kind of grass-roots leadership. I stand by my words.

Daniel, Troops on the battlefield are spoon fed their news to censor out the things that will bring down morale and probably this is a good thing. It helps keep them alive. However, their opinions of the war are colored by that spoon feed inviroment.

Daniel - just because the troops you have spoken with are content with us being in Iraq doesn't mean that they all feel that way. A good friend of mine is a lieutenant in the Army and he is furious about the war, feels it is completely unjustified, and he also thinks Bush is a total moron - and is one of the most outspoken people I know about the war/Bush administration when he's off duty. I have a number of friends in the military and there are very few who DON'T feel this way...and I believe them - they've been there, they see what goes on and if they say that we shouldn't be there, I believe them.

(Near perfect. We would not want) ...to disturb the slumber with anything as crass as truth!

Vermont...looking on my map it looks like a sliver. Now it is acting like one. I wonder how it is that a bunch of armchair civilians can know a successful or winnable military campaign? What are their qualifications? I talk to hundreds of Troops per month and not even "one" of them say we should leave, we should have not gone in or that we should believe we cannot prevail....where, I wonder ohhhh Mikey fat Moore and cronies do they get their information from... those who make so much squeely noises? I wonder which lives from Gettysburg were too many for the freedom that Americas' black population was awarded with following the US Civil War? That was 58,000 in three days. Ohh, in view of history and a thing called reality as it "is" the Iraq war has been OK...as far as wars go... not to mention the 12 years that IRAQ "BEGGED" the US to do it...but let's not tell that to the Vermontians, everything is really nice there. Near perfect. We would not want to disturb the slumber with anythin

"Bill Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998 by the House of Representatives on grounds of perjury to a grand jury (by a 228-206 vote) and obstruction of justice (by a 221-212 vote). Two other articles of impeachment failed-a second count of perjury in the Jones case (by a 205-229 vote), and one accusing President Clinton of abuse of power (by a 148-285 vote). He was acquitted by the Senate." Nothing Clinton did was even remotely as bad as what Bush and Cheney have done. But I'd had to see Bush get impeached without Cheney. Now, that man is truly scary!
