Research continues to validate the health benefits of B vitamins, as two recent clinical studies report that these vitamins may improve heart and bone health.In the heart-health study, researchers in Taiwan investigated the effects of vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid on fasting plasma homocysteine concentration in subjects with coronary artery disease (CAD). The 42 subjects involved in the single blind intervention study were divided into five different treatment groups: 5 mg/d of vitamin B6, 10 mg/d of vitamin B6, 50 mg/d of vitamin B6, 5 mg/d of folic acid combined with 0.25 mg/d of vitamin B12, or placebo.
After 12 weeks of supplementation, researchers found fasting plasma homocysteine concentrations did not respond to high or low doses of vitamin B6 compared with placebo treatment, whereas supplementation with folic acid combined with vitamin B12 significantly decreased plasma homocysteine concentrations by 32 percent, according to different studies. Since your body cannot produce vitamins on its own, you need to put it into your body through good food and supplements. Sometimes the food we consume does not provide everything we need.
