'Be Good to Women Day' Sends Prayer Around the Globe
On March 15th, religious, community and national organizations in Los Angeles and across the country will join Mr. Sanders in a rising national movement to honor, respect and support women.
"Degrading and devaluing women leads to abandonment, exploitation, abuse and violence," said Mr. Sanders in a press release. "Being kind and loving to women is more than a temporary 'feel good' moment. It's about men holding themselves to a higher standard and changing the way we think of women. Men must change the paradigm to improve the quality of life for all people."
Mr. Sanders is the host of the nationally syndicated radio show On the Phone with Ti-Rone®, an "urban Dear Abby" heard daily throughout the country in cities like Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas and Houston.
Mr. Sanders told Associated Content that he and his radio co-host Deya Smith founded 'Be Good To Women Day' in reaction to "twenty years of receiving letters and phone calls from women in various negative situations resulting from a general lack of respect and appreciation, not only from men but from women themselves and society as a whole."
There are grim statistics behind Sanders observations. According to the FBI, four women die everyday in the United States as a result of domestic violence. The number of women who have been killed by their partners is greater than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.
A U.S. Department of Justice survey estimated that over a half million assaults on women by an intimate partner are officially recorded and are the number one reason for emergency room visits by women.
Unreported domestic violence is estimated to affect 4,000,000 women in the United States, of all races and classes, each year.
These statistics are part of the drive behind 'Be Good To Women Day'. For the past four years Mr. Sanders has encouraged nationwide prayer, meditation and dialogue to counteract violence and raise awareness of the need to respect women.
