You have probably heard the expression "so bad they can't give it away." And I think it aptly applies to AOL. As a member of AOL for the past seven years, I have seen the quality of AOL go from bad to worse. For most of those seven years, I paid $23.90 a month for their ridiculously poor internet connection and awful customer service. Finally, after losing enough paying customers to their competitors, AOL decided to give their service away for free. And sure enough, you get what you pay for. Here is why AOL is the worst product ever.

AOL purportedly stands for American Online, or as The Barefoot explained to me, "Almost Online." I continued to use AOL long after I realized how horrible their service was because I wanted to maintain my email address and because, as someone who is not entirely internet savvy, I didn't want to learn the basics of a new browser. Okay, and I also liked the voiced that welcomed me and told me I had mail.

However, slowly but surely AOL turned into the worst product ever. Informative and well-written articles on AOL's Welcome Page were replaced by imbecilic gossip blogs like TMZ and NFL Fanhouse. Four to five sentences of poorly-written trash, followed by the ramblings of illiterate fanboys and catty starlet-haters. There is absolutely nothing useful on the AOL Welcome Page anymore. Except maybe for a few news videos. But I cannot view those without watching a minute-long Metamucil commercial featuring three guys called The Regulars who like to simultaneously use the john.

When AOL began blocking Associated Content with a 404 Error (I don't know what it means), I turned to AC's forums for help. A fellow Content Producer (thanks, Michy!) turned me on to Firefox, and I have been online without interruption ever since.

AOL is the worst product ever. It was not worth the email address or even that friendly voice. Which, come to think of it, said "Goodbye" more often than anything else.

This little bastard drove me crazy for seven years.

AOL is the most shitty piece of trans-assholeism there is,and the most shitty piece of trash there is. They are robber barrons and their service is terrible.

Yeah, I got sick of having my AOL dial-up service logging out (with the annoying "Goodbye" voice to boot) on me at various times, and I wanted faster service, so I switched to DSL lite a little over a year ago. Wouldn't go back to dial-up, especially AOL.

My time with AOL was very short for obvious reasons. Great article!

I have had AOL for 10 years now, and yes it can be a pain at times but all and all I have never had any problems with it. Nothing is perfect..Not even Firefox...

(Continued from previous post) The best E-mail/Messenger service I ever had was something called PowWow Mail. With PowWow, you could contact ANYONE with a messenger system--AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Excite, even ICQ. I heard it was actually developed by Native Americans technicians, but AOL bought them out and closed the service down. Of course you know that people with MSN messenger can now communicate with Yahoo! messenger service members.

Like so many of you, I started out with AOL in 1998, but the year after that I was introduced to Yahoo! and several other ISPs, and ditched AOL. I now use Time Warner's Roadrunner service but do most of my Internet work through Yahoo!, MSN, and Excite. For those of you who miss the AOL voice, Excite Mail has interactive icons like a cool karate fighter that inform you you have mail as soon as you sign in. I use AOL's NetScape for its instant messenger only because many of my friends still have AOL.

I tried AOL once in 1998 for about a week. Like they used to say on In Living Color - HATED IT! Tried DSL also for a month in 1999 once again - HATED IT! Switched to Cox Cable modem. Havent had any problems except for when my modem died once. I went through withdrawls before I got a new modem. Was ready for a nervous breakdown too. But once again I am happy to report I have remained online with NO trouble. Don't fall for all the hype. Cable modem is the way to go. Great article too.

After being with AOL since 1997, I will agree that AOL officially has the worst customer service on the face of the earth (Sprint is a close second), and I will also admit that AOL's dial-up service is horrid. However, once I switched to Comcast high-speed internet and changed over to AOL's much cheaper broadband service (less than $8/month), I didn't have any problems. I keep AOL software on my desktop, but not on my laptop (I found that it doesn't interact well with high-end programs such as Dreamweaver & PhotoShop). I still pay for AOL because I love their email. I've used several ISP's, but AOL's email is my fave. Yes, I know AOL is free now, but you lose some of the benefits (like their great customer service lol) if you go free. Oh, and I happen to like a lot of their news stories, but agree that the TMZ stuff must go.

Sorry, G Max, but AC asked for the "worst product ever," not the worst ISP. And "American" was a typo, kind of like "claling" in your Comment.

As a former employee, I'm none too fond of AOL myself. But I think claling it 'the worst product ever' is a little excessive. Maybe 'the worst internet provider ever,' but worst product? Also, it's 'America Online,' not 'American Online.'

Prodigy, Compuserve, AOL...the evolution of the net's de-evolution. Yes, I'm that old. :(

I couldn't agree more! Years ago, if you were not internet savvy, AOL had a purpose and it served it well, but now, it just hasn't kept up with the market. Good opinion - I agree!
