Even though I just finished a joint piece about Barry Bonds and Pete Rose, Rose's comments I have come across the very next day simply cannot be ignored because I'm beginning to believe that Rose might want to seek professional help for his delusions. On the Dan Patrick radio show on ESPN radio, Rose flatly proclaimed himself to be baseball's greatest ambassador, HUH? This has to be a cry for help as he couldn't possibly believe it, and it is lucky for Dan Patrick that he was on radio because I don't know how he could have kept a straight face as that phrase was being uttered. What conclusion other than delusion can you draw from a statement such as that?
Now to set the stage properly, you have to be told that the comments were extension of a portion of the interview during which Rose stated matter-of-factly that he bet "on" the Cincinnati Reds every night when he managed them, and that despite the fact that he is still in a lifetime ban from the game of baseball, he would like another opportunity to manage at the major league level, HUH?
Does he ever listen to himself when he speaks? More importantly, does ever think BEFORE he speaks? He couldn't possibly or he would "slap" himself after statements such as these. How could Rose possibly ever expect to be trusted in any dugout, even the minor leagues, to protect the integrity of the game? Does he just not get the fact that he violated, yes violated the very traditions of baseball as the American pastime and has lost our trust, forever?
He may be able to return to some sort of activity around the perimeter of the game, possibly even announcing, or clinics on behalf of Major League Baseball, to name a few, but never, under any circumstances could major league baseball ever allow Rose back in a dugout even as a coach, it is just too risky. I mean, wouldn't Rose have to have a chaperon for every move he makes, including trips to the bathroom to make sure he wasn't on his way to place a bet? Would he have to be "patted down" everywhere he goes" to make sure he didn't hide a cell phone on himself somewhere? I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get the point.
