Google to Change Privacy Policy to Protect Users

Using the web is becoming more and more integrated into our daily lives. We use it for purchases, paying bills, work and research. However the increasing use of the web also brings up concerns amongst many people regarding their privacy. Questions arise such as: is our account information safe, are our passwords secure and other personal information protected?

Google, the world's most popular search engine uses your searching habits to collect information that will help to improve its search results. The power that Google has over the Internet has brought up concerns over its privacy policies.

This resulted in the privacy advocate challenging Google to ensure that the company was not taking advantage or exposing personal information about its users. This challenge seems to have worked; as yesterday Google announced that it is going to alter their privacy policy. Many new changes to Google's privacy policy will be in effect by the end of the year. One of the most significant changes will be a regular purge of particular identifying information. This is the information that ends up getting stored in Google's Internet archives.

The new Google privacy changes will, for the moment, only occur on searches carried out via the main search page and not from some of Google's extra features such as its calendar or Gmail.

When the new Google privacy policy goes into affect this is how it will work. When you use google to search the Internet it stores various information about you such as the terms you searched for and identifying information such as your ip address. At the moment Google stores all of this information indefinitely. However, under the new policy there will be some changes. After a period of 18- 24 months identifying information, Internet protocol addresses and cookies will be erased from the stored information.
