Susan Boyle BGT Sweetheart Suffers Emotional Breakdown

Second Place Shocker

Britain's Got Talent, the original and in my opinion, more enjoyable, American Idol, has given the world another Cinderella story. Susan Boyle, cheeky and charming would-be diva from West Lothian, Scotland is delighting audiences the world over with her 'I Dreamed a Dream' (Les Miserables), 'Memory' (Cats), 'Cry Me a River' (written for the divine Ella Fitzgerald) and other beloved Broadway show tunes. I even found a clip of Susan Boyle, back in the early 1980s singing, 'I Don't Know How to Love Him' (Jesus Christ Superstar) a song I had called for her.

As with Paul Potts, Britain's Got Talent car phone salesman cum operatic tenor, we fully expected and hoped that Susan Boyle would 'make it big'. I've been following Paul Potts on Twitter and it's like reading the enchanted Prince's diary. So unassuming and reserved about his mercurial rise to international stardom. Alas, we were stunned to discover that Susan, unlike her predecessor, did not take first place at the final Britain's Got Talent.

What does this mean? Clearly Susan has the voice. 10 million page views in one day? When Susan expressed a desire to be the next Elaine Paige, the original Griselda in Cats who sang 'Memory'. I googled Elaine Paige and did an analysis of both singers. Susan Boyle's voice is stronger, more honed and richer. And Susan is 47 years old, whereas Elaine Paige, although older was only in her late thirties when she sang 'Memory' originally. Was Susan's frumpy appearance her downfall? Just the opposite. That only added to the charm! Unlike Hollywood 'actors', Broadway singers do not require a body full of silicone, bleached teeth and regular Botox injections. And with her tasteful, understated 'makeover', Susan looks very professional. Being 40+ myself, my querulous side demands whether it finally came down to a matter of her age. But I have delusions of age persecution anyway.
