Tallulah Bankhead Brought Back to Life by Valerie Harper in 'Looped'
Actress Valerie Harper is starring in "Looped," a play in which she enthusiastically takes on the role of aging actress Tallulah Bankhead, reports the Washington Post. The play began its run at the Arena Stage in Washington DC on May 29.
According to the Arena Stage, "Loop" "tells the story of actress Tallulah Bankhead, the original celebrity bad girl, who stumbles into a film studio session to re-record (or 'loop') one line of dialogue for her final film, 'Die, Die My Darling.' What ensues is a showdown between an uptight sound editor, Danny Miller, and the outrageous legend. Southern, but by no means a belle, Ms. Bankhead was known for her wild partying that out-shone even today's superstars, including innumerable affairs with both male and female celebrities and outlandish exploits that were even investigated by the British secret service."
"Looped" premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse in the summer of 2008. The aforementioned Valerie Harper is a four-time (!) Emmy-award winning actress who is perhaps best known for her role as Rhoda Morgenstern on the classic "Mary Tyler Moore Show" and on "Rhoda," the spin off series. Interestingly, in 2000, Valerie Harper and Mary Tyler Moore brought their roles back to life in the ABC made-for-television movie "Mary and Rhoda." The show drew an amazing 18 million viewers.
But now Valerie Harper is playing Tallulah Bankhead, a much different character from Rhoda Morgenstern. As the Arena Stage notes, Tallulah Bankhead was the original "celebrity bad girl."
Thus, Tallulah Bankhead's modern-day counterparts include Paris Hilton, Britney Spears (also Southern, but by no means a belle) Nicole Ritchie, Lindsay Lohan and Kim Kardashian. All of these young ladies are known for their prodigious partying and assorted other shenanigans and antics - including sex tapes and mental meltdowns. To my knowledge though, neither the British secret service nor the CIA has investigated any of these young women. Not yet, at least.
