Normangee Veterans Memorial
Normangee Veterans Memorial, located near the entrance to the Normangee Independent School District campus, was presented to Normangee Independent School District by the Ex-Students Association on Memorial Day, May 31, 2004.
The Normangee Veterans Memorial is a project sponsored by the Normangee Ex-Students Association. A dedication ceremony was held Memorial Day, May 31, 2004. A crowd of approximately 150 people gathered to observe the impressive presentation ceremony. W. C. "Bunkin" Bennett (graduate of NHS 1962), committee chairman for the memorial project, was Master of Ceremonies. Bob Parker, (graduate of NHS 1949) expressed appreciation to those who donated to and assisted with the project. Joe Melvin Ellison, (graduate of NHS 1941), a retired U.S. Army Colonel who spent 26 years in the military service, gave a very moving dedication address.
President of the Ex-Students Association, Louis Westmoreland, (graduate of NHS 1959), presented ownership of the memorial to N.I.S.D., which was accepted on behalf of N.I.S.D. by school superintendent, Gary Adams. A young man from the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets played "Taps" to conclude the program.
A monument at the entryway of the pentagon shaped structure lists the names of 17 area military personnel who were killed in action. There are benches placed strategically around the inside of the structure. Near the center of the inside of the Normangee Veterans Memorial are granite monuments with the names of 706 military veterans from the Normangee area, dating from World War I to the present. Names are listed alphabetically under the branch of service in which each veteran served; Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
The citizens of Normangee are very appreciative of their veterans and hold a special ceremony at the school in their honor each year. All students in the school are involved in the program in some way. Speeches are made and songs are sung. The children are taught about the sacrifices the veterans have made for us and how they have served our country. Many of the area veterans attend and participate in the ceremony every year.
