Peta would have you believe that stars like Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce are evil for their affinity for all things fur. Peta would also have you believe that KFC grows their chickens under circumstances where they become so large, their legs snap out from underneath them. Peta would also have you believe that they are committed to the ethical treatment of animals. In reality folks, PETA is an organization committed to using sensational tactics to draw attention to their organization. Question is, does PETA truly support the ethical treatment of animals?

For years, I boycotted KFC, having been convinced by PETA that they were evil. For a long time, as a person who does not believe in animal waste, I naively assumed that PETA was committed to animal rights. When my support for PETA was challenged, I began to take a closer look a the organization. Sadly, the more I dug, the more I learned that PETA is not the benevolent organization that I once thought they were.

In June of 2005, "two PETA employees were charged with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty each, after authorities found them dumping the dead bodies of 18 animals they had just picked up from a North Carolina animal shelter into a Dumpster. According to the Associated Press, 13 more dead animals were found in a van registered to PETA."

Hmm, that doesn't sound like ethical treatment. Well, we can't let two people represent an entire organization, right? After all, surely PETA does not condone such behavior? Unfortunately, PETA fans, it gets uglier. "In 1991, PETA killed 18 rabbits and 14 roosters it had previously "rescued" from a research facility. "We just don't have the money" to care for them, then PETA-Chairman Alex Pacheco told the Washington Times. The PETA animal shelter had run out of room."

I completely agree that PETA is very hypocritical. If members take a closer look, they will find the truth you have.

Just like most companies and organizations, there are good people and bad people involved. However, I still fail to see how it's okay for an organization that is supposed to protect them to euthanize even one, especially for reasons that have nothing to do with animal sickness. I love all animals and if I ever found a stray or injured animal, I'd instead rely on a local no-kill shelter if I couldn't help the animal myself. I read Lynne's article first. Having read both, and having seen negative reports about PETA, I'd have to say I lean more toward agreeing with you, Shanika.

...which appaled just about everyone, including PETA so they were of course let go. So yes, PETA recognizes room issues at shelters and in certain cases they DO want to euthanize them before others come in and shoot them or cram a bunch of helpless animals in a gas chamber that sometimes has to be run twice to do the job. Anti-PETA folks tend to sensationalize this. PETA really is trying to do good here.

PETA works with Virginian animal rescue shelters to teach them how to humanely euthanize animals. That 10,000 number isn't a secret. PETA would rather teach those places about proper euthanasia than have those animals stuck in leaky gas chambers (slow death) or get shot as they do here in the deep south. As for those two workers, that was in NC. There are bad apples everywhere. Those animals were supposed to be cremated that day and instead were placed in dumpsters...

I knew some of this, but you have so much more!! And to PETA member -- so did you. What good HAVE they done? I think PETA hates pets.

Wow, I didn't know all of this about PETA, and am now more than curious to do some research myself. I disagree with the "PETA member" who posted that we should look at all the "good" PETA has done instead of the "few problems" its had. I don't know about anyone else, but euthanizing thousands of animals without waiting to see if homes could be found for them is a little more than an organization having a "few problems"...it's downright cruel, unethical, and disgusting behavior. God, I can't even THINK about animals being euthanized or abused...it really makes me sick.

I hate PETA. I'm an avid snake lover - and though I know some people have a horrible phobia of snakes, they are not nasty creatures. I spend a lot of time and money caring for my snakes, and they are quite content. However, because so many people are afraid of them, PETA is attacking herp keepers first by spreading 'facts' that snakes regularly kill their owners and spread bucket loads of Salmonella. They are trying to get snake keeping banned, then all reptiles, then wouldn't you know it, cute little kitties and puppies too. PETA can kiss my [insert word of choice here]! Support your local shelters people, and tell PETA to stick it.

It's easy to point out the few times PETA has had problems, but what you failed to show is all the good PETA has done.

Yup. It's hard to trust an organization that touts itself as a crusader for animal rights, then goes to a dog show to unleash dogs from caring families to either get ran over or mauled by a feral animal. Awesome article!

Yeah, it's an organization that meant well at one point but has done about as much harm as it has good in the end. I'd read some of these reports myself when they happened. Good exposure here.

I cannot STAND PETA. While there are many GOOD people involved with that organization, I wish they would all just support their local animal charities rather than these terrorists. In the past, they have gone so far as to send people out to teach their members to make pipe bombs. I think that PETA needs to remember one VERY important fact: Humans are animals too.
