The fertile commercial mind of George Lucas never stops harvesting. Amid reports that Lucas plans to release net a new edition of the original Star Wars trilogy in 3-D film comes word that he has teamed up with Spike TV and AtomFilms to create the Star Wars Movie Fan Challenge. Just what is this challenge? According to the web site:

"We're looking for all kinds of Star Wars fan movies - spoofs, documentaries, fan fiction (NEW), animation, big budget, low budget, no budget - just grab a camera and make a movie that will blow away your peers. We strongly recommend short runtimes (under five minutes is ideal)."

The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2007 so get out your digital camcorder, your Star Wars Lego sets, your handy dandy light sabers and all those cool masks and costumes and start creating Star Wars magic. The winning movies will be aired on Spike TV, on the Star Wars web site and even at the Star Wars convention. Remember, the original came out thirty years ago, so this convention is likely to be the biggest ever. If you've ever wanted your own dream version of a Star Wars movie to be seen by a massive audience, this is your best bet.

Maybe the coolest thing about the Star Wars Movie Fan Challenge is that there are different categories. While George Lucas will pick a best overall entry, don't despair. If your forte is animation, you can win in that category. If you've got the perfect Star Wars spoof that has never been done before, there is a comedy category. And if George Lucas just plain didn't get it right, there's also an audience favorite that will be chosen at AtomFilms.

I entered this thing about three or four years ago. I hired actors, a sound person - blah blah blah. And that year, it was flash cartoons and a guy in a stormtrooper costume that took the prizes. My friend did the same thing. Actors, etc etc and his never made it past the semi-finals (and his film was hilarious, btw). So, if anyone is going to enter this thing, my biggest piece of advice: think small. Think what you'd find on YouTube. I think that's the key. At least that's my experience. :)

Check out the Pink Five series on Atom films. (Winners in the previous contests.) Trey Stokes did them, and they're great. (Disclaimer: I did some work on The Return of Pink Five.) In spite of my participation, it's still great. Search Pink Five, Pink Five Strikes Back, and The Return of Pink Five on Atom films...
