Extending Bush's Term? I thought it was an law that a president could only serve two four year terms, Well as of last year a bill passed through congress changing that law. The law its self is not as old as one might think.

George Washington our famous first president declined a third term, he wanted to have order in the presidency. There was not a law in the Constitution stating that a president could only run 2 terms, all presidents just abide by this silent "law" among them. That is until Franklin D. Roosevelt, He was an extremely popular president, He saw his people through four years of the depression and they were not ready to let him go, so when he won his last election it was for his fourth term.

Roosevelt died approximately 100 days into his term, Then Harry Truman became president.

In 1947 congress passed the 22 amendment

Amendment 22 - Presidential Term Limits.1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

But since Harry Truman was in office when the amendment came to pass, this did not apply to him. He could have ran for a third term, but he chose not to. On January 5th, 2005 congress without announcement passed a law referred to as the " The Doomsday Legislation" which basically extends the current presidents term, and will postpone an election if we are facing or all reading fighting global war, extreme natural disasters, and Terrorist attacks.

They are not removing the two term limit, but they did pass the law in 2005 that states that a president's term can be extended if the terms I talked about in my article happened. I saw this on a pbs newscast and then did research on my own. A interesting site that has some of the information is this http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=2233.

Do you have any sources on this? I can't find anything about removing the 2 term limit. The only "Doomsday Legislation" I can find allows Congress to conduct its business without quorum (50% of Congressmen or something) if there's a catastrophe that keeps Congressmen from being there.
