Do your homework and you'll see that child abuse is not a new trend, just one that is getting more and more public attention lately. There are plenty of cases going as far back as the 1800's (probably even further) showing that children have always been subject to unimaginable tortures inflicted by those who are supposed to protect them and love them the most. Recently, there seems to be a wave of incidences involving child abuse resulting in death, but even the recent attention to it doesn't seem to be making it better. The recent cases of children being abused, such as Jason Midyette, an infant who was brought to the emergency room in Colorado in March of 2006 with severe injuries including a swollen brain and over 20 bone fractures, are just recently starting to make an impact in the media. Of course, we have always seen cases of child abuse and murder that have been given national media attention, but none more so than lately. It seems like the public is no longer just focusing on the social status of a child's parents, as they are on the alarming number of cases reaching the news every day.

Whether we realize it or not, there are ways to improve the situation. We just have to want to take that step in the right direction. Even if it seems like you can't possibly make a difference, you're wrong. Here are some very simple things that can be done to fight the war on child abuse:

Takeaways
  • CPS should implement sticter policies for investigations and follow-ups of child abuse claims.
  • It is every persons duty to report suspicions of child abuse, even if they are proven wrong.
  • Parenting classes should be a requirement for teen parents.
Did You Know?
According to a report given by the Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, over 870,000 children were reportedly abused or neglected in 2004 and of those more than 870,000 victims more than 75% of the time the abuse was inflicted by a parent.

If anyone wants some valid insight into the child protection industry read: This is Child Protection? By Gregory A. Hession, J.D. This article is probably the most accurate article I have read exposing the secretive world of CPS. Ever wonder why the juvenile/family courts are not open to the public, know you will know! State CPS regulations are just for show.

Great article. Child abuse is on the rise. People need to speak up when they expect it and Children's services need more funding to their job.

Good points and workable advice. Sadly, society is set up, so that every thing needs to be proved in court. The child that is being abused will lie either to protect the parent or out of fear of more abuse.

Omg I know, I am always finding a piece in the news about children being abused, and everytime I want to break down and cry and just hug my child that much closer.

Some very practical things anyone can do is offer to step in and help a stressed out parent and give them a break so they can calm down or mentor a teen parent.
