When you walk down the street, you'll encounter at least 50 people from the time you leave your house to when you get to where you're going. These 50 people all have a story to tell about what they do, where they've been and where they're going. When you walk past them, you can only see the superficial qualities of a person like what they're wearing and what accessories that they have. Unless you get into a lengthy conversation with the person, you will never know what they've been through or what they're going through at that moment. All that you see is that they could be in a hurry or they're not wearing the right clothes. But, I think that the question that everyone needs to ask at least one person is "What's your story?"

I was in sixth grade when I met a person who had just transferred to Milwaukee from Sicily. She barely knew English and she was as out of place as I was. The only exception was that I was out of place because I was unpopular. In the two years after that, I tried to learn Italian from her and we became really good friends. Needless to say, I also learned a lot more from her than Italian. I also learned that everyone had a story and it would be fun to find out what it is. When I was little, I would always ask a new student why they came to the school that I was at. If they were new to Milwaukee, I would ask why they were in Milwaukee. I didn't think that Milwaukee, let alone the school that I was going to was important enough for someone new to come to. However, I was wrong.

People always uproot and move to different places. But, it's not very important to the people that already live in that city or state. I think that everyone has a tale to tell and it is always quite interesting. The problem is that nobody wants to ask. In the movie, Crash, Don Cheadle's character stated that in Los Angeles, people have to crash into each other just to interact because it is so busy there. I believe that is the saddest thing that I've ever heard. On the other hand, I doubt that I would want to live in a place where everyone knows me by name and knows about my entire life.

I think people are using the Internet and blogging to tell their stories today. I took a train vacation one year. At a train stop in Arizonia, I walked over to where a guy was leaning on the fence. He said he does that every Saturday at noon, the only time the train stops there, just to talk to people like me. We shared bits of our story, and I found out he used to live in LA not far from where I lived. Sharing stories is a good way to learn that as people, "we are more alike than different" and that might be a good way to end wars.

people seem to be surprised at MY story. I am an ex Seventh-day adventist Missionary (9 years in S. Korea teaching English/Bible), Pastor's wife, practicing lesbian since 2004. I have lived in Ma.,Ok,Co,Ne,Wa and am back in Co. I am an AC CP,Internet Geek, who could teach anybody almost anything on the computer (though I do have my limitations). All that and I'm "only" 44 yrs old!

when you tell your story to other people. I'm pretty sure that other people would reciprocate the favor after you listen to their story. I'm afraid I lost the train of thoughts in the above line, shouldn't it say after they listen to your story, instead?

A great way to learn how others perceive the world in which we live, and perhaps a way in which to deepen our understanding of our own lives as well.
