Keeping teens safe on the internet is extremely important. With the increased awareness of teen predators online, it is imperative that adults become actively involved in teen safety on the internet. Do not be nervous or afraid of the internet and the personal computer. Being able to guide, watch and protect teens while they are on the internet is imperative to teens' safety. Below is list of guides to follow to increase teen internet safety.

[1] Before allowing teens on the personal computer, learn how to use the computer. Learn how to change passwords, block emails, log instant messages, log chat rooms, set internet browser security levels and in general how to get around the computer. Knowing how to use the computer will make the adult both more comfortable and more aware of what activities are happening online.

[2] If the teen is to have a personal computer in the bedroom, make sure that the screen can be seen from the doorway. The adult should be able to walk by the bedroom and view what is displayed on the computer monitor screen at all times. In addition, make sure that the volume is turned up on the personal computer and headphones are not allowed for teens. Being able to see the screen and to hear what is played on the computer, will encourage the teen to not deviate from approved sites. In addition, the adult will be able to hear the message chimes to know that the teen is receiving instant messages and sending messages. If the computer screen is not visible from the bedroom entrance, it does not need to be placed in the teen's bedroom.

[3] Whenever possible, place the computer in the main area of the home. Do not allow the use of headphones for computer usage for teens. Adults need to sit with teens as often as possible during internet usage. When the adult cannot directly supervise the teen, having the computer in the main part of the house with the volume turned up will help to alert the adult of potential problems.

[4] Limit internet usage. Have other activities planned for teens to keep them entertained and involved with the family. Teens that are not on the internet cannot run into internet safety issues.

Takeaways
  • Keep computers in an area that monitors are visible.
  • Encourage open communication with teens.
  • Change passwords frequently.

This is too strict. Teenagers are biologically and functionally adults and have the same privacy needs. Treating them like overgrown children is damaging.
