OLD SAYBROOK - Ninety-five years ago, Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia first founded the Girl Scouts of the United States and here in Old Saybrook, this achievement will be celebrated.

A written proclamation signed by First Selectman Michael Pace, Selectman William Peace, and Selectman Velma Thomas declares the week of March 11-17, 2007 as "Girl Scouts Make The World A Better Place Week".

Almost 50 million women have participated in Girl Scouting including Thomas.

The Board recognizes the role the Girl Scouts has in "increasing girls' awareness of the opportunities available to them today in math, science, sports, technology, health and fields that can expand their horizons."

They especially recognize the fact that the Girl Scouts have made their world a "better place by discovering, connecting, and taking action in their communities."

Pace said the Girl Scouts are an important group in the Old Saybrook community and appreciates the hard work of all the volunteers who have assisted this group.

The proclamation states that Pace "applauds the commitment Girl Scouts has made to America's girls."

The Girl Scouts website states the organization "fosters values, social awareness, and self-esteem in girls, while also teaching them critical life skills for future success."

Today, there are 3.7 million Girl Scout members.
