Family-Friendly Middle Georgia Tourist Attraction: Lane Southern Orchards

The signs along Highway 96 begin enticing you with promises of fresh strawberries, ice cream, pecans, peaches, cobblers, pies, and pastries before you reach the entrance to the family-owned Lane Southern Orchards near Fort Valley, Georgia in Peach County. The pecan and peach trees along 96 seem to stand with pride, as if boasting about their delicious contributions to this family-friendly Middle Georgia tourist attraction's success.

When you arrive, the green letters that read, "Lane Packing Company" and the huge peach on the building grab your attention quicker than the cursive "Lane" and the simple "Southern Orchards" text. Yet, the two names on the building mark the company's rich history and progressive future. However, when many local visitors talk about Lane Southern Orchards, they fondly call it "Lane's."

According to their website, www.lanesouthernorchards.com, Lane's "farms over 2,700 acres of peach trees," which produce over "30 varieties of peaches." They, also, boast 2,100 acres of pecan trees. The harvest from these trees can be found in products sold in the Roadside Market or the Peachtree Café.

Depending on the season, the Roadside Market offers shelled and unshelled pecans, strawberries, grapefruit, oranges and more. Of course fresh peaches can be purchased in the market; however, dried peaches, peach cobbler mix, jars of peaches, peach muffin mix, peach licorice and jelly beans can be found here, also. When you walk into the gourmet area, you will want to taste the samples of jarred products offered. These samples entice you to buy them and other products on the shelves, such as salsa, pickled okra, honey, cinnamon mix, and various BBQ sauces. Vidalia onions, corn, melons, and other produce can be found in this area, too. If there's a Lane Southern Orchards product that you don't want to purchase while visiting, the Mail Order Department will ship it to you.
