When a baby is born most count to see if he or she has all its fingers and toes. This is the first thing that a new parent attends to. We don't worry whether the child will be able to see color properly. As the child grows up and begins to learn their alphabet, how to count and colors it is imprinte
d on them by memory. We take it for granted that the colors orange, green or blue we see is the same way the child perceives them. This isn't necessarily true. Colorblindness, a trait that is inherited happens primarily in the male species. My biggest secret: I was born colorblind and I am female.

I lovingly refer to my problem as color dysfunctional because I do not see in black and white. Which plenty ask when they find out my secret. Next everyone wants to test me. Their little game of "what color is this and that" can go on forever sometimes. Everyone has a great laugh after each pop quiz. Then usually it segues to "Well how do you drive?" What do you mean I always ask? Well the stop lights they say. Uhhhh well when I went to get my driver's license they never asked me if I was colorblind (dysfunctional). No, no, no that's not what I mean is usually uttered. OHHHH, okay! So once more playing along I proudly announce: Red's at the top, Yellow's in the middle and Green's at the bottom. If they turn the signal for height restraints, it gets turned to the left. But the colors still appear the same. *Sigh. OHHH yeah, huh, is usually what I hear! Believe me it gets old but because colorblindness is so rare in the feminine gender, hopefully I am educating the world in some small way.

Shoot I was trying to say I cannot see 3d. We have tried different glasses and different pictures even 3D movies that require 3D glasses and I get nothing. I am the only person I know ho looks at 3d stuff and still things its only 2d.

I forgot to mention I too am female. Nobody ever believes me unless they do the color quiz and sometimes they think I am faking it.

I don't think my last comment made it but here goes: I am 21 years old and I too am color blind but in a weird way. I confuse colors along with missing colors all together. I got tested in school before and I tested myself at home. Both times I came up positively color blind. I too have trouble mixing clothes or buying clothes that look good. I once picked a green skirt and showed it to my husband thinking it was a dear BROWN skirt. He said "Honey that's an ugly army green skirt." I said "Brown." He said "Green." I said "BROWN!" He said "Honey who is color blind here? Would I lie to you?" And I threw my hands up in the air huffed and put the stupid skirt back away. I also have gotten the pop quiz on colors. Unfortunately, its embarrassing to me because I'l say something is purple thats blue something is brown that's green etc etc. Also my dear husband likes to make 3d pictures. I look through these 3d glasses that are of course red on one side blue on the other I cannot see 3

Great article. I am "colorblind" as well and it is tough at times. Especially being a single guy and having to pick out ties for work. AHHH!!!

Carrissa, You are quite welcome. It comes as a shock to me that more people are unaware still.
