Enough is enough! My daughters and I have too much stuff.

My 5-year-old daughter and I go through somewhat of a ritual. We go through her toys, and she tells me what she doesn't want anymore. She, much like her father, doesn't get attached to material items, so she easily puts
all her unwanted or recyclable toys in the hallway. Usually, after we go through this process of elimination, my 2-year-old daughter goes through the unwanted toys and claims what she wants. I have to admit that I claim toys for her, as well. Also, there are certain toys I can't bare to let my daughter get rid of, such as her American Dolls and Build-A-Bear dog and puppy.

The items that don't get to remain in the house get boxed up or bagged up, so they can ideally be sold at a consignment store, flea market, yard sale or on eBay. At least, selling the toys starts off as the plan. However, after about year, I've only sold about ten of my daughter's old toys, despite them being in great condition. After trying to sell her toys, I put the unsold ones back in the garage for a future sale. What usually happens is that the girls rediscover the toys, and the toys find their way back in the house. They do a significant amount of shopping in our garage.

I'm guilty of accumulating things of my own. I have toys, projects, and written works from my childhood in my home. In my mother's attic, I have Michael Jackson memorabilia, Debarge memorabilia, school yearbooks, dolls, and more. (My mother, however, saved my dolls, so her grandchildren would be able to play with them one day.) About two years ago, I called my mother looking for my prom dress. As far as I knew, all my formals from my high school and college days were still hanging in the attic. I was astonished when she told me that my father had given all of them to Goodwill years ago! He'd gotten rid of a lot of stuff, but somehow he'd missed much of my stuff, too.
