It also entails, through the descriptive lyrics and swirling piano medley, the tales of what people could have done with their lives. Above the happy tune, there are the words of dark and gloom. The song would mark Joel's becoming a major artist with strong songwriting abilities. Also significant is that Joel would be one of the first artists to predominantly play the piano during his songs.
