After the turbulent Sixties, the Seventies would prove to be mellow. The Seventies are known as the "songwriters era". While some feelings from the sixties spilled over into the seventies, most of the changes were more about one's self. Another character is the "Me Decade", and some of the music reflected this. The music was more introspective with lyrics people could relate to themselves or their lives..

Number five is "American Pie", by Don McLean. Recorded and released in 1971, "American Pie" was a swirling, descriptive account of "the day the music died". Referring to the day of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson. Although none of the singers were ever mentioned, many interpretations by various sources, indicate what McLean meant with this song. It is the length and descriptiveness of the song that is most important. It spoke of McLeans life in the late fifties to the late sixties and could actually speak to thousands. He also alludes to how differently the culture of America had changed since the passing of these three singers. Also at eight and a half minutes was one of the longest singles ever to enter the charts and to be number one.

Number four is "Piano Man", by Billy Joel. Released in 1973,, the song has become the signature song of Billy Joel. The song was written by Joel as a remembrance of his days as a lounge singer. It also entails, through the descriptive lyrics and swirling piano medley, the tales of what people could have done with their lives. Above the happy tune, there are the words of dark and gloom. The song would mark Joel's becoming a major artist with strong songwriting abilities. Also significant is that Joel would be one of the first artists to predominantly play the piano during his songs.
