College Liberal Arts - Will it Help Me to Succeed?
Liberals Arts is about general knowledges and intellectual skills, as opposed to specific skills and occupational learning. This study has been understood from the ancient times. Plato, Socrates, and many other philosophers believed that a well-rounded individual would make the best decision maker (philosopher king). Today, this discipline includes majors such as English, Political Science, Philosophy, etc. The programs normally provide students to make their own conclusions.
A program in Liberal Arts education helps students to succeed in the real world because it teaches them how to think. Think about a vocational degree such as Nursing. The program requires that you learn about the very function of working as a Nurse. Instruction would center on learning procedures to take care of patients and clients. As you can see, the vocational study is very focused on one field: nursing.
With Liberal Arts, the purpose is not to learn a specific area of study. Instead, students are exposed to a wide array of disciplines so that they can see the diversity of answers. A student in Nursing learns only one way to do things; whereas, a student in a political science course learns the various perspectives in government. Not all problems have the same solution. Liberal arts teaches students that there are many ways to tackle a problem such as realistic and idealistic perspectives of the world.
