They may all have the same general outward appearances but are all slot machines really created equally? The probability of hitting the jackpot is low but some casinos offer a better chance than others. Some players believe that even the chair that you choose to sit in can increase your odds of winning.

While a progressive slot machine with games such as Quartermania or Megabucks has a higher jackpot payout than the typical slot machine, the amount that goes to the house is also higher. This decreases the individual players odds of winning. On progressive machines, up to 15% of the amount that is played goes to a cumulative jackpot and the odds of winning are reported to be 50 million to 1. Having a higher payout to one lucky player decreases the odds that an individual player will earn a return on their play. If long shots are what you are looking for, then the progressive slots may be the pick for you.

The traditional or "off line" slot machines offer a much better chance that an individual player will earn a return on their playing funds. The payout is not as high as the progressive slots but these machines are programmed to pay out a certain percentage of the amount that they take in. This set up allows for more winners but a lower payout upon hitting the jackpot.

There are many different theories s to what slots are hot in a casino. Some people believe that playing a slot machine closer to the door or a crowded hallway will increase the odds of winning. They believe that the casinos will use these well paying machines in high traffic areas to attract more players. If a passerby sees someone collecting a huge loot of coins, that would tend to draw quite a crowd and raise the excitement of those passing by.

Upon entering the casino, take the time to see if they offer any "certified" slot machines. Casinos will often have information about what percentage of winnings the slot machine is paying. Take the time to find out if the certification is for a particular slot machine or the casino's machines in general. This does not guarantee that you will win the posted percentage but at least you know what the odds are.

Takeaways
  • Their are certified slot machines that tell the amount that they are programmed to pay out to player
  • Progressive slot machines have 50 million to 1 odds.

I have a question. My son won the mega million just recently 1,269,422 to be exact. He said that he has the option to take the payments (after taxes) over 20 years, or take a "discounted" lump sum payment! Don't you think this is false advertising. If you win, you win, how you receive your money shouldn't have anything to do with the amount you win, right? Do you know how much they'll offer him? Have you heard of this?
