Romance novels come in many categories and within the genre there are subcategories like paranormal romances. What are paranornal romances? Simply put, paranormal romances are romance novels that involve paranormal elements, which drives the plot and sometimes the romance. While the tried and true still reign supreme in paranormal romances, some writers of the genre have delve deep into myths, mythologies, and folklore, which has resulted in some interesting new trends in paranormal romances. Here is a brief overview of some new and old trends in paranormal romances.Vampires
Since the publication of "Dracula" vampires have been the "go to" guy in paranormal romances. When one thinks of vampires they think of blood, sexuality, immortality, and danger; perfect ingredients for paranormal romances. The best thing about having a main character as a vampire is that the mythology surrounding them is already well known, and this knowledge is not predicated on having to have read "Dracula." Although, the hot vampire in paranormal romances have become, at least for me, rather old, but in the hands of a good romance writer can still spark my interest.
Lupa, a.k.a. Werewolves
The trend of Lupa or werewolves in paranormal romances have been around for years and shows no signs of abating. Again, the general mythology surrounding wolves is such a part of the general public's consciousness that any competent writer, with a good imagination can write an entertaining paranormal romance with this premise. Think about it, there is the Alpha in the werewolf pack, which is then transformed into the Alpha male in the paranormal romance. Also, some of the mythology about wolves are very romantic, for example, they mate for life. In addition, they run in packs and are considered social animals, and this for the romance writer it can mean tons of secondary characters; therefore a paranormal series.
