Last week when the NAACP requested that Georgia should apologize for slavery, the House Speaker Glenn Richardson replied, "Nobody here was office" during slavery. Edward O. DuBose, president of the Georgia NAACP said, "An apology will not improve education, but an apology will acknowledge that white benefited from slavery and the inhumane treatment of African-Americans."
Meanwhile, Senate Bill 283, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Mullis, is further polarizing the races. The bill asks that Georgians set aside "each April to honor the Confederacy, its history, soldiers and others who "contributed to the cause of Southern Independence." The bill also encourages the Georgia Civil War Commission to develop a curriculum to teach state Confederate history in schools." to teach state Confederate history in schools." Sen. Kasim Reed (D-Atlanta), stated "I think that in light of the conversation we've been having about Georgia accepting responsibility for its history as it relates to slavery, this is not appropriate," Reed said. "If we're not going to address that issue in a candid way, I find it inappropriate to be passing a measure such as this."
