Celebrate Everything Superman in His Hometown of Metropolis

2
The annual Superman Celebration has been happening for the 31 years and this year it's June 11th through June 14th in Metropolis, IL. The city puts on a spectacular event every year as all things Superman are celebrated and cherished. This year is no different as celebrities and fans are drawn to the hometown of Metropolis to indulge in Superman-mania. My family has attended this several times in past years and every time we go, it's better than the last time.

The celebration opens Thursday with the Grand Opening Ceremony where 2009 Superman, Josh Boultinghouse will be introduced. A carnival with rides, games and food booths also opens. A Superman Road Race is being held at Fort Massac State Park on the edge of the city.

Comic artists and celebrities appear throughout the festival to sign autographs or give workshops. A BMX Bike Show, Superman Jeopardy, Video Game Tournament and Kids Superhero Costume Contest are some of the attractions for Friday. The evening is capped off with an appearance by Noell Neill, Lois Lane in the 1948 and 1950 movie serials and later opposite George Reeves on The Adventures of Superman television show. A tribute will given, covering her career followed by her tribute to George Reeves as this is the 50th anniversary of his death. Saturday continues the fun with Superman X Games, Superdog Contest, Bench Press and Dead Lift Competition, Magic Show and The George Awards and Auction with some of the proceeds going to the Christopher Reeves Foundation. Beverly Washburn who appeared in Superman and the Molemen in 1951 will present and uncut showing of the film Saturday night. Harrah's Casino is hosting an outdoor concert starring Merle Haggard and Shooter Jennings. For night owls, there is a Metropolis after Dark: Artists Alley Costumed Dance Party at 10:30 PM. This is a first time event for the Superman Celebration.

The celebration winds down on Sunday with car shows and a variety of contests, including the $1000 Superman Celebration Costume Contest. Other celebrities appearing throughout the celebration include Justin Hartley and Phil Morris of the hit series Smallville.
