"Peace" Protestors in Portland Burn an Effigy of a United States Soldier

Burning an Effigy of a United States Soldier is a Great Example of Peace, Don't You Think?

How often do we read something on the internet that has the ability to really affect our emotions? Not often, at least in my experiences. I tend to avoid what I'm not interested in, won't appreciate or find offensive.

With that said, every once in a while I'll follow a link to read stories that are not endlessly regurgitated by the MSM.

Today I came across a blog called Little Green Footballs -- you know-- the blog that broke the story about the forged documents about President George W. Bush that Dan Rather passed off as fact during the election season of 2004.

Any how, Little Green Footballs exposed a peace protest in Portland, Oregon that occurred on March 18th 2007; Anti-war demonstrators burned an American flag and a United States soldier in effigy. Also shown was the charming photograph of a large white sign that read, "F**k the troops!"

I can feel the love, can't you? What happened to "support the troops?"

I'd like also like to thank the media for humping this story and showing these enlightening images so that Americans can see all sides of the news. That's the media's job, is it not? Wait, never mind -- I think most of us know the answer to that.

I will state that my family has fought in quite a few wars to preserve the right of freedom of speech and the right for these unpatriotic fools to protest against their own country and the men and women who make it possible for them to do so. If they claim to be anti-war then why are they so violent? Maybe it's because they want to fight for something but they are too afraid to fight for the right thing. Ultimately, they want others to fight for them, or as George Orwell once stated: "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

The words and actions of these demonstrators are such a contradiction; they are all for 'peace' but only on their terms, making their idea of peace conditional, which makes it worthless. And people wonder why war will remain with us so long as there are two human beings on the planet? It's because people are unwilling to get along -- they can't get along!

Did You Know?
We make war that we may live in peace.

I asked AC to remove the screep cap. For more info, here's a video clip of the event: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=38e_1174691271&p=1

Great article, Donna Schoenrock, and thank you, M. E. Miller. It disgusts me more if this happened in Oregon. I love Oregon. Why is it that a person can sue for defamation damages, but an entire country, her best people and our flag is fair game? These idiots did deliberate damage with malice. How is freedom at stake but justice is disregarded entirely?? People should be culpable for ALL the damage they do. What's wrong with that? If the BBC uses this as one of their subtle pot-shots at american charactor, that's calculated in too. :) Remove unecessary anonimity from the net and watch how suddenly the politeness begins. Will these idiots burn flags without their fasionable masks? Same thing. Brian, how can that not be a matter of cowardice? Terrorists killing civilians. "demonize"? "mischaracterize"? Youve GOT to be joking!

You can call it distasteful and I'm in full agreement. But to call it cowardly is like calling a terrorist a coward. That's just stupid and intentionally mischaracterizing. If we don't grapple with these difficult issues honestly, and resist the temptation to soapbox and demonize, we'll never get the perspective we need to reach understanding and to make progress. There's nothing cowardly in taking the risk that a real patriot, or the police, will come along and beat the heck out of you for doing something so obnoxious. Call it misguided, call it extreme, call it disrespectful. Fine. Just try being honest.

Great article, Donna. "In this land of freedom, there's riots in the streets all in the name of peace." (lyric from "Believe" by Stryper, 1991) I, too, am disgusted with behavior such as that exhibited by these so-called "peace protestors." It's one thing to disagree with a war, or to protest and make one's thoughts and feeling on the subject, but this is sinply disgusting. Thank you for writing this. Excellent article, once again!

I find these people disgusting. They are more than willing to reap the benefits of a country that "allows" them to do such horrible acts but they have no respect for those who defend their right to do them!

Excellent article! Thank you for writing about this. We need more attention brought to disgusting stories like this since the mainstream media will not report them. /Salute!

These fools have nothing to do with the anti-war movement. Nothing. If destroying property or burning someone in effigy--ANYONE, no matter how much you disagree with the person or symbol--has a point beyond the "thrill" of the act itself, that point most certainly isn't peace... I hope they get all they deserve.

Well written as always. Your passion really shows in your writing and it in turns affects all those who read it. You truly have a gift Donna. I agree with you 100%.

It's great that these pictures were taken. It shows how dispicable some of our fellow Americans, I mean Anti-Americans, can be. No doubt most of them just put the pipe down before going to the rally to exercise the free speech that soldiers through out the years have fought for. I also noticed that many, no make that all of the flag burners were wearing masks. What gives? I guess they are not proud enough to take credit for their actions. Come on people don't be cowards, be proud of your actions, I'm sure your parents are. It's one thing to not support your country or the war, but to carry a flag that says F*** the troops is beyond reprehensible. The only reason you can carry a sign like that or burn a flag is because of the actions of the fine soldiers that you protest. Now that's thanks for you!!

Great article, thanks for bringing this to peoples attention.

it is hard to think that I and my fellow soldiers fight for their freedom but since I have this IDEA of what peace is(totaly different from the Anti-war dumbasses) I will keep fighting as long as my life will let me for everyone in the greatest country in the world

I'm glad this reporter brought light to this. These guys should spend a day in our shoes before they get to chastise us.

Whatever happened to the charge of treason and the death penalty that went with it? Forget disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct! These traitors belong in jail doing time wondering if they are going to get the full sentence available to them and make sure there is no media coverage to satisfy their overactive egos. Then they might learn to be a little grateful for that freedom they never earned and take for granted.

I don't like war. This is insane...I hope these clowns are the first to be fed to the terrorists.

Freedom of speech is one the greatest, and yet perhaps one of the most dangerous of gifts. Too bad some of these fanatics take this right and twist it into an "entitlement" - or worse, one with a blind-sighted cause. I too feel the soldiers deserve more respect. More people should excercise their liberty of expression to support those who are really in the muck of it all.
