Nothing beats the summertime heat like a fun pool party. To throw a good one, all you need is a decent sized swimming pool and some creativity. Here are some pool party ideas that are sure to make your get-together a smashing success.

Preparation. First, safety should be a main priority. Assess the age group that will be attending the party. No matter what, it is important to be prepared for all levels of swimmers - life jackets are highly recommended. If small kids will be present, make sure you have arm floaties and float toys for them to use. Keep in mind, the younger the guests, the more supervision you will need. Teens and older should be able to mostly supervise themselves, but it is always a good idea to post rules and enforce them.

Make sure your neighbors know that you are planning a party. If they want peace and quiet by a certain time, try to be cooperative. Nobody wants a good time ruined by agitated neighbors.

If you can afford it, try to have plenty of beach towels and beach balls for guests to use. You can even buy cheap sunglasses to hand out as party favors; this will help put everyone in the pool party mood right from the start. Also, if your party is during the daytime, having sunscreen available for guests is a must.

Decorations. Every pool party needs decorations to help create the appropriate atmosphere. Sea shells and fishnet are two items that can be strewn about on tables, and tiki torches are always popular, especially if the party involves older guests and may go past sunset. Another idea is to partially fill balloons with water and then inflate them with air. They can then be set in the pool to float around and be played with. Colorful streamers and lots of lights will also do wonders for your party's aura.

Music. What is a party without music? For a pool party, it depends on the crowd that will be attending, but Hawaiian music is always a good bet. If you are looking for something more lively, the Beach Boys or other surfing-themed music might be the way to go. Again, be courteous to your neighbors and watch the volume.
