What's the story?
The year is 1774 and Georgiana Spencer is a 17 year old aristocrat who is selected by the Duke of Devonshire to be his wife. The marriage is without love and the Duke enjoys spending more time playing with his dogs than talking to or getting to know the Duchess, it is clear to her that the reason for her marriage is so that she can bear him a son, even while the Duke enjoys the company of other women. When their first child is born it is a girl and the Duke is not pleased, believing the Duchess to be making a mockery of him.
The Duchess is popular with everyone it seems but her husband. Her beauty and charm lead her to be the centre of a powerful social circle who revel in her parties and her gambling ways. She uses her influence to help further the fortunes of the Whig party, and in particular those of Charles Grey, the man who would become Prime Minister and for whom she had feelings for before her marriage.
After stillbirths, mis-carriages and another daughter, the Duchess meets Lady Elizabeth Foster who becomes a close friend. She moves in with the Duke and Duchess and eventually becomes another mistress for the Duke. This leads to the complete breakdown of the marriage, with the Duchess imprisoned within it, whilst she is not allowed to be with the one she again loves.
