A Good Time to Buy UK Domain Names?
I've spent a lot of time today browsing the site at Sedo.co.uk to see what domains are available but, before starting my search, I reviewed the list of recent UK domain sales at DomainPrices.co.uk. That site only appears to analyse the domains sold with the .co.uk extension but, as that is by far the most popular UK extension, it's a good guide to realistic values.
Looking at the recent sales and the prices agreed I started looking for some good names to buy. I was particularly looking for a catchy, easily spelt domain with a certain keyword within it. Unfotunately I didn't find anything meeting my requirements but along the way I noted some interesting offers.
Among the very best - and most expensive - domains on offer at Sedo I thought Toy.co.uk, Teach.co.uk and Organic.co.uk stood out. But such names are well above my budget so I needed to delve in deeper looking for more modest and affordable options.
The Nominet managed UK domain extensions also offer the .org.uk and .me.uk options in addition to the popular and, ever more expensive .co.uk tail. While these domains are less popular among domain traders, they are just as effective at getting indexed by search engines and attracting traffic to a website that possesses good quality content. So perhaps there is value in these extensions as they are almost certainly going to be no more than a fraction of the price the .co.uk extension would command for the same name.
Therefore, with these extensions in mind, I found ill.me.uk, blogging.me.uk and article.org.uk all listed at Sedo seeking offers. While it is usually the way that the owners of strong keyword domains expect mega-offers, I wouldn't expect these less popular extensions to achieve all that much by comparison to the .co.uk versions. My thinking is that, for a modest three figure investment in such names, a good medical directory, blogging service or article site could achieve very prominent placement at the search engines and the resultant traffic could be monetized effectively.
