Use Twitter and Be a Better Writer

Twitter can be a lesson in writing? Yes, I believe it can. Very soon after joining Twitter you will realise the 140 characters allowed in a tweet force you to be concise and keep to the point.

Many people become convoluted when they write and use long sentences of description, justification and reinforcement for their arguments. Such writing quickly becomes difficult when you're restricted to a total of 140 characters!

Use Twitter regularly and you will see your vocabulary usage can expand. You may even find yourself using a dictionary or thesaurus again (if you can find them!) to create clear and concise messages. Twitter is based around your current actions so be prepared to increase your use of verbs at the expense of adjectives. It's about what you are doing rather than describing your activity.

Personally I've only been using Twitter for a couple of months but, in that time, I've already seen a positive impact on my general writing style. This is particularly useful for online productivity. Naturally writing in a more concise manner should appeal more to an internet audience, save time, and is almost certain to produce better keywords for the search engines to digest and ultimately improve your natural search traffic. Thus Twitter helps you optimize website content too.

So, just one question remains; "What are you doing?"
