I think all Associated Content producers were pleasantly surprised when the performance bonus program was instituted. And I was more than pleasantly surprised the first time I saw my bonus figures. I'm still not sure how the AC performance bonus program works in terms of what date the bonus started from, but I was more than thrilled to see that mine was over $150 from day one. What made this especially surprising to me is that I figure myself as one of those writers who is like an alternative band or an independent filmmaker: one who has a small but devoted following but isn't massively popular. (Like the Barefoot, for instance, who everybody seems to enjoy and with good reason. I hope he comes through with that ten bucks he promised me for plugging him.)

In other words, I never really expected much in the way of bonus bucks because I know I'm not quite everybody's taste. But that fact allows me to fulfill a request from Associated Content to write an article giving advice on how to increase your AC performance bonus. The way I see it there are two basic routes you can follow. You can either write articles that are keyword rich in hot button topics and issues or, if you would prefer to write about something other than Britney Spears and American Idol, you can write about everything else. My wife recently counted up my articles and videos and at the time I was exactly one short of hitting 1,000 published content pieces for Associated Content. If I were to take the time to do such a thing I have little doubt that I would find I've published at least two pieces under every single available category. Yes, true, I publish predominantly under the Society and Entertainment categories, but I've managed to run the table over the course of my prolific career here. The key lesson to be gained from this approach is that the performance bonus is based entirely on page views and the broader your portfolio the more likely you are to find an audience either through simple browsing or the type of reader who has a specific interest in a certain category.

This is a great article! I've been trying many different forms of promotion lately, now I just have to wait and see what works best.

What wonderful advice, and it is obvious that you love writing by the way you wrote this article. The only thing I would disagree with is watching 24 hours of George Bush ha haa, I couldn't do that. Congratulations on your sucess too you are an inspiration. Sincerely secrets

I had a very large and loyal readership when I wrote for Epinions. I decided after reading this that I would be best served to switched my name on AC to the one I used over there... in an effort to let the google set find my work here easier should they be wondering where I'd gone off too... heh. I shoulda thought of that from day one. Ohj.

Great information. I've been looking for ways to increase my bonus and hope to get up to $100 in a couple months. Thanks for the great article!

Very helpful. Thanks. Nice writing, too. I'm just beginning to get on to the keyword leg-up. I admit I may start out to write an article about the way nasty way we bash celebrities,(and everyone else for that matter), but I will couch my comments in a piece with a Britney Spears headline. AC is a dream come true, especially for writers who can't give up teir day jobs. I will look forward to reading your other works.

Great tips. I'm hoping to increase my performance bonus next month, as I've been somewhat lazy about promoting. I would much rather write.

Very good info from the recent CP of the year! I love squidoo, it's an extremely helpful and informative site. Know who wrote some very good articles about keywords? Amy Brantley, here on AC. Check out her articles/resources for keywords. Thanks for the article, Mr. Sexton!

Thanks for the tips Tim. I've heard about these squidoo sites but have no idea how it works. You think maybe you could give us a link to one of your squidoo sites as an example? Also for anybody else reading this I'll take this opportunity for a cheap plug. If anybody is looking for another way to promote your content and get some more AC buddies I have started a Facebook group for such a thing. Send me a message if you'd like to join.

Keywords, for those who are wondering, are words that internet search engines look for when deciding to pony up the top sites. It's a fascinating, frightening world involving putting certain words and phrases into your article at a certain ratio--preferably around 2% of the word count. In that way, your article will stand a better chance of popping up high when someone Googles those keywords. There have been several articles written by AC writers much more knowledgeable than I about this magic secret and I highly recommend seeking those out. In addition entire books have been written on the subject of getting your articles at the top of the search engine heap.
