Training a kitten to use the litter box

Usually, the mom will train their little kittens how to use a litter box, which is much more preferred to accidents on the carpet; however, if you are the mom of the kitten, there are ways you can train the kitten to use a litter box as well. Because kittens learn at a different pace, there isn't exactly a set time for the kitten to learn how to use a litter box, but it can be done.

Buy a good size litter box

What good is a litter box that they will have difficulty getting into or even to? Make sure that the litter box is at an area they can go to, and is a good size for them; thus, they can reach it on time.

Praise

Every time your kitty goes to the litter box remember to praise them. You want to associate the litter box with a feeling of happiness. Praising them after they go to the litter box will indicate to them they are doing a good thing; thus, they won't be going anywhere else.

Put them in the litter box after meals

After they finish their meals, put them inside the litter box, and scratch the surface of it with your fingers. If your kitty goes, praise them. If they don't, keep an eye on them in case they decide they want to go elsewhere. And if they do, take them back to the litter box.

Squatting positions

If you see them in the squatting position anywhere in the house, take them to the litter box right away. Don't scold them or throw them in. Be gentle, and praise them afterwards if they go. This will let them understand that that is the only location they should do their business.

Nighttime and litter box

At night, don't keep your kitty away from the litter box because they are not capable of holding it in all night. It's like a little baby won't be holding it in all night, they'll go whenever, wherever in that situation.

Changing location of litter box

After you've got them going to the litter box, don't change the location as this may erase the memories of any prior teachings. If you find a good spot for the litter box, keep it there. It's just like how the toilet in your house doesn't change locations.
