What is Skype?

Communicating for the Future

2
All of us have at least one or two relatives or friends that live a long distance from our own residence. And while we'd like to be able to speak with them on a regular basis, long-distance phone calls and fees can restrict us from communicating with them the way we would prefer. It can be a frustrating dilemma to have to deal with. At least that was the case until a new internet phone calling system was introduced in 2003. Skype, a downloadable software program designed to make phone calls via the internet, was made accessible to the public in August 2003.

Since its inception Skype has been through several transitions. In 2005 eBay purchased all the outstanding shares of Skype for $2.5 billion dollars. According to CEO Meg Whitman Skype's potential would be enhanced by partnering with eBay. Also in 2005 the video teleconference feature was introduced allowing peer-to-peer chats with visual assistance. In 2006, Skype 2.0 for Macintosh was released. Then in 2008 Skype 4.0 beta, a full screen version, was added. Then Skype was discontinued due to chat room difficulties until February 2009 when Skype 4.0 is re-released.

Currently, Skype offers free Skype-to-Skype calls, instant messaging or video calls. You can also make local and long distance calls for minimal fees. Skype can be downloaded to any PC or laptop for free and can be used on your computer or mobile phone. Skype uses a contact list, which allows you to connect with peers beyond physical reach. You can add contacts by adding phone numbers, search for people already on Skype or import contacts from your e-mail address book. With access to Skype-to-Skype calls, instant messaging, video calls and local and long distance calls there is no way to miss the opportunity to connect with relatives and friends.

Skype can be downloaded via their web site in three easy steps. First, press the "download" button on the Skype web site and it will take you directly to the download instructions, which are as follows:
