Fallen Saints - What Happens to a Believer Who Fails?

We've always been taught that a saint is a sinner who fell, and got back up; but what about a saint that has fell? What do we call them? Here's a story about a sinner who became a saint, who became a sinner:
Joseph always sent his children to church; It wasn't that he didn't want to go for himself, but it was the fact that he felt he was out on parole from the religion world: With TIME SERVED. He had been an adamant follower of the word, and a faithful attendee during his younger days. He encouraged his children to study the word and attend services of worship every chance possible, and this wasn't seen as a bad thing by the community; But they always asked the children why their father didn't come with them. The children would reply, "He had to work." Even though, they knew he didn't, and so did the other church members.
One day, Joseph's health failed him after all of his children had grown-up and moved out on their own. He became very sick and wasn't able to take care of himself. The only thing he knew of was to pray to the Lord for health and strength; He attended worship services that following Sunday.
Once after service, Joseph regained his religion and joined church; taking his spirit and wellness to a higher level. He felt close to God and knew that this was something he should have done a long time ago. He became more involved with the church and it's auxiliaries. Soon, time came around where his children were returning home, praising him for getting his life back in the hands of God; but to their surprise, Joseph wasn't showing the love they thought he should have as a Christian. Instead, Joseph was ridiculing them for not being like the saint he felt he had become. He criticized them for their lifestyles, jobs , and extra-curricular activities.
