2009 AFC West Quaterback Rankings

1. Philip Rivers San Diego Chargers (6-5 228) 34 TD-11 INT- 4,009 Yards

Rivers is clearly the best QB in the division. Philip has playoff experience and is capable of carrying the Chargers through the AFC Playoffs with his arm. If Rivers can get a Super Bowl ring then he would be included in the group of great AFC QB's like Brady, Manning and Rothlisberger. Since he became the Chargers starter Philip has thrown more than 20 plus TD's in three consecutive seasons. His experience and talent should give the Chargers an edge when competing against AFC West opponents.

2. JaMarcus Russell Oakland Raiders (6-6 260) 13 TD- 8 INT- 2,423 Yards

JaMarcus has been labeled a bust by a lot of media outlets that have not taken the time to correctly examine his situation. The first thing that people need to take notice of is he threw 13 TD's and only 8 interceptions in his first year as a starter. The Raiders leading wide receiver in 2008 was Johnnie Lee Higgins with only 22 receptions. Clearly Russell was not getting any production from the receiver position. JaMarcus went 14/21 with 2 TD's and 1 INT in a victory at Tampa Bay that kept the Bucs out of the NFC playoffs last season.

3. Matt Cassel Kansas City Chiefs (6-4 230) 21 TD- 11 INT- 3,693 Yards

How good is Matt Cassel? If this was a poll question I would not be shocked if the results came back 50/50. Was it Moss, Welker and the Patriot coaching staff that was responsible for Matt's success last season? Can Cassel really step in as QB of the Chiefs without the services of Tony Gonzalez and put up anything close to the numbers that he had with the Patriots? If you compared the Patriots and Chiefs o-line, receivers, defense and coaching staff the Patriots would get the edge in every category. Cassel is being paid like he is one of the NFL's best, but can he produce like he is a top ten QB in 2009?

4. Kyle Orton Denver Broncos (6-4 217) 18 TD- 12 INT- 2,972

  • The Raiders leading wide receiver in 2008 was Johnnie Lee Higgins with only 22 receptions.
  • Philip has thrown more than 20 plus TD's in three consecutive seasons.
  • Brandon Marshall led the Broncos with 104 catches in 2008.
