Planning a wedding is a stressful experience and you often feel as though your life is being run by your day planner and checklists. You look forward to the days after the wedding when you have time to just sit back and relax. Unfortunately, once you return from the honeymoon, there are a few more things that you will need to take care of.

Get a copy of your marriage certificate

If you plan on changing your name, you will need an official copy of your marriage certificate. When you got your marriage license, they probably explained the process for obtaining a copy, but you may have been too preoccupied with other wedding plans to take note. Typically, you just need to return to the location where you got your marriage license and then pay a small fee (usually $15-20) to get a copy.

Change your name on all official documents

If you decide to change your name, you will need to make sure that the change is reflected on all official documents. You will need to visit some offices in person to do this. If you are able to, you may want to take a day off of work so that you have time to do everything.

In addition to providing a copy of your marriage certificate to change your name, you also frequently need to provide a copy of your driver's license and Social Security card. To change your name on your driver's license, you usually have to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles in your area. You will likely have to pay a small fee for a duplicate license or a renewal. To change your name on your Social Security card, you need to download the application from the Social Security website. Then, you need to take your application and a copy of your marriage license and driver's license to your local Social Security office.

After you have changed your name on your official documents, you need to contact your employer, banks, credit card companies, and insurance company as well.

Great list! When I got married, I was afraid I'd forget to do something important afterward (like change my name on my driver's license). Thankfully, I didn't forget anything, and I even relaxed enough to enjoy the honeymoon!
