My grandmother used to take me shopping when I was younger. She never really said much about it at the time, but she never bought things that weren't on sale. Every time I step out the door to go shopping, part of that experience goes out the door with me. I was in retail clothing store the other day, and even the woman behind the counter was excited about my total price. I always claim that my grandmother taught me how to shop, and it's true. It's my secret, but today I've decided that I'd like to share some great shopping tips:

Don't Buy What You Don't Need

Some people use sales as an excuse to buy things that they don't need. I purposely don't cut coupons on a regular basis for exactly this reason. Holding a coupon in my hand leads me to believe that I'm going to get a great deal on something that I wouldn't have bought if I hadn't found the coupon at all. The coupon or sale ad put the idea in my head, so obviously the ad has done its job. Many people see a coupon or a sale ad and decide that the product on sale is something that they need. We confuse our wants and needs on a regular basis. Always take a step back and reevaluate whether or not the item you are going to buy is something you actually need.

Always Check the Clearance Racks

I have a friend who walks into stores and does not buy a single item unless she's taken it off a clearance rack (or similarly priced sale rack). She has come to work in beautiful two-piece pantsuits, sweaters, and even dresses that she managed to snatch up at prices ranging from $4 to $10. You have to search these racks. Often times you will look at a clearance rack from a distance and think that the items are all appear tattered or out of style. Go and search the rack. It's like a treasure hunt and there are, many times, great finds hidden amongst the muck!

"Only what I need." That's my mantra. I chant it to myself sometimes when I walk into the store. It has saved me an unbelievable amount of money and suffering.

Girl, I feel you on all these. If its not on the list then you don't get it and we always eat dinner before shopping. No hunger sprees here! Thanks for the great tips!

I am a pro at shopping! These are some great tips....another great one for the list. Befriend the sales associates. Its not that hard to be nice and when you shop somewhere regularly the chance that they will remember you is pretty high. Most stores will hold pieces for you, get friendly with a sales associate and ask them to let you know when the piece you want is going on sale. S.A's all over Chi have my card...and I NEVER pay retail.

I use to go shopping with my grandma too, but she had a different approach. She would go into a store for one specific item, and an hour later she was pushing a full cart out the door. ;-)

Well I'm not a big shopper, but I'll keep these tips in mind. Maybe one day when I have a woman I can keep her spending to a minimum.

Excellent tips! I always shop the clearance racks or the discount clothing stores, especially for my little ones. I often can walk out of a particular store and spend 70 dollars on 10 items or name brand outfits. It's always a steal for me!

Good advice, I know I wasted a lot of money in my younger years - like many - and now I see where every dollar counts.
