Could Your Child Be a Carrier of Strep Throat?

Is This a Dangerous Trait?

We all have heard of the virus Strep, especially Strep throat. Most of us have even had it a few times. Strep throat is an infection that generally causes a red, swollen and sore throat, fever, white coating of pus over the tonsils, swelling in the lymph nodes, decreased appetite and
energy. But did you know that certain people can be Strep carriers?

What is a Strep carrier?

First this is not an alarming issue and it is may be more common than you realized. About ten to twenty percent of us are Strep throat carriers. To be a carrier bacteria would have to live in the back of your throat, even when you don't have an infection. Therefore whenever a carrier is tested for Strep throat the test is going to come out as positive. This means carriers need to be careful about taking antibiotics when they are not really necessary. They should only take antibiotics when they are showing true signs of having strep, when they have the fever and the pain and swelling.

Can strep carriers actually spread the Strep virus? Usually, no. Although you will find some conflicting answers to this question.

When you are a carrier of Strep (streptococus pyogenes) you always have this form of bacteria living in the back of your throat. The best time for your doctor to check for this bacteria is when you are not sick. If it tested during a time you are feeling sick you may test positive because the bacteria is always alive in the back of your throat or it may test positive because you are actually sick, have been sick or are getting over the virus. It can be hard to tell the difference. And yes, a healthy adult may become infected with Strep as often as once a year for several years. Yet, this healthy adult may not be a carrier for Strep. This adult has just been infected with the virus, itself.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to take some extra precautions if you are a carrier and you are around someone with an immune deficiency or with rheumatic fever. By taking extra precautions, this just means covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, not talking too close to this person, normal everyday things you should do anywhere out of decency.

Related information
  • Usually most strep carriers can not actually give the virus to anyone.
  • It just means that live bacteria lives in the back of one's throat.
  • It does mean that a carrier will always test positive for strep, even when he or she is well.

Sally, I know how frustrating this is as my 6 year old has a similar story as your 10 year old. I have also battled the schools over this. I'm not sure about the disability questions but I would suggest you have your doctor write a letter explaining your childs condition, make a copy keep one and give one to the Principal. When talking to the schools tell them you are feeling harrassed by them. Send a letter off to your state education agency describing your treatment and your concerns. Bottom line is if you make enough noise and have validation that your child has a condition that you don't think is being treated fairly by the schools they will back off. In this day and age they are as afraid of lawsuits as anyone else. Don't let them get away with treating you as if you are a bad mother. I used every connection I had and made sure they understood I wouldn't let them bully me. Request an audience with your school board and explain the situation with papers in hand, contact

MY 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAS HAD STREP THROAT MORE TIMES THAN I CAN EVEN COUNT.IT SEEMS TO HAVE STARTED ONCE SHE REACHED SCHOOL AGE. AFTER HAVING HER TONSILS OUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO (WHICH I THOUGHT WOULD PUT AN END TO IT) SHE STILL GETS IT. I RECENTLY CHANGED HER DR.HOPING SPMETHING CAN BE DONE. SHE HAS MISSED SO MUCH SCHOOL THAT I AM TREATED AS THOUGH I AM A BAD MOTHER. I HAVE EVEN BEEN THREATENED TO BE TAKEN TO COURT IF I DO NOT HAVE DR.EXCUSE FOR EACH DAY MISSED. THE SCHOOL COUNSILOR ACTUALLY TOLD ME IT WAS RIDICULAS THE NUMBER OF DAYS SHE HAS MISSED,EVEN THOUGH I HAVE DOCUMENTATION. IT IS FRUSTRATING AND SEEMS NEVER ENDING! I WOULD CONSIDER HOME SCHOOL BUT DUE TO RECENT DIVORCE I AM A SINGLE MOM. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS WOULD CLASSIFY AS A DISABILITY?

I had a couple mild bouts in my teens and one severe case in my early twenties but was never told I was a carrier. I found out when I developed sepsis after an operation and almost died. Had I known I was a carrier the surgeon said extra pre-op antibiotics could have been prescribed. Take heed if you're a carrier.

My 7 year old son has been diagnosed with Strep 3 times over the last six weeks. After being on different antibiotics each time, 2-3 days later he starts feeling symptoms of soreness in his throat. The Ped Dr. wants me, my wife, and 11 yr old daughter to get tested. My son is allergic to dust mites, cats (we have no pets - just fish), shrimp and cockaroaches. He has had ear infections in the past but none over the last 2 - 3 years. It is only recently that he developed this string of strep. He has tested negative in the past for strep when he was feeling well. I'm not sure what else to do.

My ped Dr says my son may be a strep carrier. He has had strep 4 times since he's had is tonsils removed. How do we get rid of it? He constantly complains of his legs and ankles hurting and also has behavioral problems, which are a side effect of strep. He has been diagnosed with strep once again, and they are putting him on antibiodics. I need to get him well...I have been at my witts end trying to figure out why his personallity changed from being "happy go lucky" to never listening or doing what he is told! It is very frustrating.

Growing up I have gotten strep up to four times in one year. This year isn't any different. How does one become a carrier of strep? Is there any treatment to fix my "status" as a carrier?

I had strep frequently as a teenager, and they removed my tonsils as a result. I am now 30 and have only had it once since my surgery. My husband and three year old daughter both had strep in the past month, and now I'm feeling the beginning symptoms off and on for the past month. My question is, can I have the virus without the severe sore throat

I am a strep carrier, I am also one of the rare people who when the strep actually does flair up I get no symptoms. My undiagnosed strep cost me 5 days in the hospital, 2 ER visits, and heart damage. They estimate that the strep went untreated for 2 years. I know get checked regularly to make sure the strep bacteria is not taking over again. Great article.
