Perhaps you've heard of the controversial games Manhunt and Grand Theft Auto. In 2003, Rockstar North released Manhunt. The game was rated M for Mature (ages 17+) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) for intense violence, strong language, blood, and gore. The back of the case read, "This is a brutal blood sport." This game was about a company called "Valiant Video Enterprises," Which records videos of a person trying to stay alive, by killing anyone in his path in any way possible. The player acts as the character James Earl Cash, a prisoner whose execution was staged so that he could participate in the "movie." Players go through the game and kill everyone in sight. If you don't kill them, they will kill you!

The controversy is all about the killing and the different ways that you can kill in this game. The players have a large array of weapons at their disposal. Even the instruction booklet for this game is made to look like an order form for the weapons that you use in the game and other violent movies. They may use plastic bags, glass shards, bats, guns, chainsaws, axes, nail guns, and a plethora of other weapons. Shortly after its release it was banned in 3 countries: Australia, Germany, and New Zealand. The reason it was banned seems obvious, the extremely graphic violence and gore.

There was also a tragedy of an actual killing in the UK by a teen that had been playing the game. The parents of the teen that was killed said that their son was lured to a park by a 17 year old player of Manhunt, and then stabbed and beat to death with a knife and a claw hammer. Rockstar denied any association between Manhunt and the killings. They then went on to say that the game was intended for players over the age of 18, and shouldn't be played by minors at all.

I wonder where that stereotype of gamers comes from, could it be from the morons that sit around and complain about a video game article based on facts? Does it not scare you that people allow their 14-16 year olds to play whatever games they want? I dont know what scares me more, the fact that "gamers" want to be blind to the truth and live in their own little gamer world or the fact that you really believe what you wrote.

Well I can see that you are just like Jack thompson arent you? You are border line insane and you lie to get people on your side.People have been blaming any kind of violence that was by a kid on video games which now gives people a excuse for killing and here is something that I did'nt make up. A 17 year old kills two cops with there own guns after he was pulled over. When he was arrested the littel moron says "Life is like a video game... You have to die sonner or later." those little words caused about 3 years of arguements and crap but guess what it wasent because of a game or anything he was high and after becoming sobre again he said that which caused his death sentance to be delayed for 2 more years. These things people say about videogamers almost make us like where another race and how everyone is giving us stereostypes and saying things about how these games make us want to kill but guess what if a kid picks up TA and after that wants to kill people he already had something w

Ya, the murderer didn't even own Manhunt, that was the victum. The whole thing was over drugs. Anyways, kids shouldn't be playing games. That's the parents fault if they do, not the makers. All they're doing is making a form of entertainment that some like. Not all would like it, but that's the case with anything. People just need to learn to accept that there are things out there that they don't care for or approve of. It's a part of reality.

Get your facts straight moron. The kid that was killed was the manhunt player, not the killer himself. You sound like Jack Thompson, completely mis-informed and self riteous.

Very good article. Yes, Rockstar games has gone too far, but then parents have given up too much parenting to the television, video game systems, and schools. JMO.....Good job. Keep writing.
