One thing fans of Law & Order: Criminal Intent well know is that there are two camps concerning star Vincent D'Onofrio: the camp of people who love his idiosyncratic, scenery-abusing portrayal of Criminal Intent's Det. Bobby Goren and those who can't $#@!ing stand the guy.

And of course, yes, there are those who fall somewhere in between. Those are the people who only watch Law & Order: Criminal Intent on the commercials of Desperate Housewives. This year, cast changes - or additions- allow people who dislike Goren to still enjoy the CI mysteries on Sunday nights.

Criminal Intent, the third of Dick Wolf's L&O franchise, is a plot-and-character driven mystery show. As Goren, D'Onofrio is the main event, and his character's ability to get into the criminal - or even the witness'- mind and piece together crimes to nail the bad guy is the center of the show. There's also the "criminal's point of view" element- we get to see the criminals doing their thing outside of the police purview.

Goren is teamed with Alex Eames (Kathryn Erbe) who is more than a sardonic sidekick. Yeah, Goren gets to make all the big discoveries and do the final "gotcha" but Eames is smart and picks up on things pretty quickly herself. Co-stars Jamey Sheridan as Capt Deakins and Courtney B. Vance try to keep things going fullsteam ahead and in a way that leads to conviction, respectively. Vance, especially, is underused as the Law to Order ratio here is about 1: 1 million.

This year the detectives split episodes with L&O original Mike Logan (Christopher Noth) and Carolyn Barak (Annabella Sciorra), officially because D'Onofrio and not to mention Erbe were getting exhausted carrying the show. The divided fan camps were out in full force, some saying there can be no CI without Goren, others saying, Not as Logan, the sarcastic, old school cop who started the whole L&O thing going is better, more realistic, easier to watch and nicer to look at. Sciorra got a good review from The New York Times last year while TVGuide called her lifeless.

Takeaways
  • Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe play NYC Major Case Squad Detectives
  • So do Annabella Sciorra and Christopher Noth
  • The show has great mysteries solved with psychology rather than guns
Did You Know?
Kathryn Erbe acted opposite Kevin Bacon in Stir of Echoes

HUGE D'Onofrio fan. I can't believe he's leaving. I love everything about him and his character - good to see I'm not alone.

Oh man, I am so glad to find out that I am not the only one out there who absolutely ADORES Vincent D'Onofrio's character as Bobby Goren. He is a fantastic actor. I love how he uses his hands as he depicts the scenes. You can tell he is a very smart, quick actor and really studies his character and what he is to do with the scene. I would be DEVASTATED if he left Law and Order:CI! I believe the reason for his weight gain as someone mentioned, perhaps is for a role in some movies he is doing this year. But I think he is GORGEOUS no matter what size, shape or whatever. I do wish his hairdresser would decide on a length for his hair. I think it looks best when his curls just come in. Still close to his head ya know but a little curly, and the grey is fabulous.I think a little bit of curl, brings out the boy in him. He is so cute! I live in Asheville NC, near where his sister lives (Brevard, NC) and I would love to meet him if he ever came to town, as I am sure you all would too!! Anyway,

I for one LOVE Detective Goren. I like the relationship that he and Eames share and the way their subtle humor kinda bounces off of each other. I agree with the above - Carver was another great fit with G & E and I miss him. I thought Logan's character was good in the prison episode alongside G & E but solo he just doesn't do it for me on Criminal Intent, we surprised me at first because I really liked Christopher Noth on Sex and the City. But, sorry Chris, NOBODY can replace Vincent. Yummy!

Correction make that ..."I can't imagine a Criminal Intent fan who would NOT choose Goren and Eames

I can't imagine a Criminal Intent fan who would choose Goren and Eames. While I agree that Goren is the essential figure that makes this series unique, Eames is the perfect straight man as proven when she went on maternity leave and was replaced briefly by the ineffectual Samantha Buck. I love Noth in the original L&O, but then he had Jerry Orbach to bounce off. If Vincent every left, I'd suggest having Detective Pembleton(Andre Braugher) move from Baltimore to replace him and bring along Kyle Secor for eye candy.

Bobby and Alex are Awesome!! Vincent D'onofrio is DREAMY!!!!!!!

Goren & Eames rules. Noth is from the orig l&o and I feel hurts Criminl intent. Also lets forget Goren & Eames personal problems and concentrate on the story line. Goren is a modern day Sherlock Holmes. But the beautiful Eames is definitely not Watson. I believe that Goren & Eames makes tv worth watching since Star Trek TNG is no longer in production. Pay them whatever and keep them on at all costs.

Goren and Eames are essential to LO:CI. Add Logan and partner, Wheeler is fine, but not to the exclusion of Bobby and Alex. Also, I found Wheeler fit in as the 'new kid' and thought it would be interesting to see Logan mentoring her as Brisco did him years ago. I too was concened about D'Onofrio's appearance as not healthy, and am relieved to see him improving. It did seem to bring the pleasing expansion of Erbe's roles.

So what happened to Annabella Sciorra? I thought that she hit the right note and helped balance Chris Noth. The two together were a good counterpoint to the other dynamic duo.

Please allow me to make one observation!! I really believe that Vincent D'Onofrio (Det. Robert "Bobby" Goren) will eventually LEAVE THE SHOW...as hard as it is to believe, I'm getting this "sinking" feeling in the pit of my stomach. And when Det. Goren leaves... who on earth would be able to replace him... NO ONE!! And that will spell the end of Law & Order:C.I. (why do you think there are so many marathon broadcasts of the espisodes with Goren featured) Tonight is Thursday, November 16, 2006 and the USA Network is doing just that! I've been watching episodes of L&O:CI with Det. Goren since 5pm this evening (back to back) Oh joy!!!

I'm a little worried about Det. Goren!! Vincent D'Onofrio has put on quite a bit of weight and he doesn't seem to be as enthusiastic about his character as well. Why did ADA Carver (Courtney B. Vance) leave the show?? I read in several places that Jamey Sheridan REQUESTED to be written out of the show...

Goren and Eames fan. Imagine my fear when I tuned into my favorite show and I found Mr. Big. These two clowns muck up the show. Go back to sex and the city and leave the police work to Goren and Eame.

9-20-06 Goren and Eames fan. Get rid of the new boss he doesn't fit in. bring back Carver.
