Album Review: Saliva Comes Through with Their New Release, Blood Stained Love Story
Artist: Saliva
Title: Blood Stained Love Story
Release Date: January 23, 2007
Record Label: Island
Saliva's newest release, Blood Stained Love Story, is a very solid release from these Memphis rockers. The CD features a mix of styles from rap-metal to pop, and ballads to straight-ahead hard rockers. This CD sounds great alongside the band's last couple releases, Survival of the Sickest
and Back In To Your System. With every album, Saliva's sound continues to evolve and change, showing their maturity as people and musicians, and showing off a broad range of musical influences. It's refreshing to see a band not get stuck in the rut of making every subsequent album sound like the first couple hits from their career. This is a band that's not afraid to take risks. Josey Scott proves once again that he is an amazing vocalist. He can rap and scream at you one minute, and sing a heartfelt ballad the next, and sound great on all of it.
The lead single, "Ladies and Gentlemen", is slated to be used as the theme music for an upcoming WWE pay-per-view event this spring. The song has the rap-rock feel of some of their earlier rap-rock material which launched them into the spotlight, such as "Superstar" and "Your Disease" from the "Every Six Seconds" release. Though not their best song, it's a very solid lead single which has been receiving play at rock and alternative radio since late last year and is enjoying great success on the Active Rock charts.
Personal favorites for me include the hard-rocking "Black Sheep", the mid-tempo ballad "Here with You", and "Starting Over", a song anyone who's ever been through a break-up or another rough patch in life can easily relate to.
The only song I can honestly say I would've left off the CD is "King of the Stereo", which is currently getting airplay on XM Satellite Radio's Squizz channel. It's not a bad song as far as rap-metal goes, but I know Saliva could've come up with something better. In fact, there are nine better tracks on this CD.
