With the worries that dog owners face now, over the recent recall of various pet foods, it almost makes you wonder what is safe to feed our beloved, furry friends. It seems that new dog food brands are being added daily to the "Do Not Feed" list.If you really want to keep track of what's going into your dog's mouth, the easiest way is by making your own homemade dog food. It's not as hard as it may seem, and it will leave you a certain peace of mind.
A lot of experts in the dog industry insist that commercially made dog food is unsafe for your dog. Companies use very low quality meat when processing food, many times meats that would be considered unsafe for humans!
Here are some steps to help you if you choose to make homemade dog food!
1.Always check with your veterinarian before switching to any homemade dog food.
2.Know what your dog needs. Dogs need a diet that consists of 40% meat, 30% vegetables and 30% starch. Make sure you include all of this to have the healthiest diet and supply your dog with important nutritional needs.
3.Always cook meat before feeding it to your dog!
4.Know what meats are good for your dog. Organs, such as liver and kidneys, are good for your dog. Eggs are also very good and they supply much needed protein.
5.Try making a mixture of ground turkey, rice and carrots for your dog food. Another popular meal could be ground beef, brown rice, brewer's yeast and carrots. Always rotate your meals so your dog can enjoy various flavors without getting bored.
6.Add garlic! Adding garlic to your dog's meal gives it a great flavor, and garlic is a natural flea repellent.
7.Use oatmeal, pasta, rice or potatoes for the starch portion of your dog's diet.
8.Grind up eggshells and add those in. Eggshells are full of nutrients. As always, make sure they are rinsed well to prevent salmonella.
