What Ever Happened to Separation of Church and State?

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."


These words were writ in 1776, but they hold the same power and weight as they did two hundred and thirty years ago. But somehow, they do not demand the same respect. There are those among us that believe that some people don't deserve these rights; that one's quote-unquote morality should determine what rights you have.

The legislation of religious morality seems to have began in the 1870's, with the passage of the Comstock Acts. These acts restricted the distribution of birth control information and contraceptives, medical texts that depicted or described the human reproductive organs, and any articles deemed "obscene". These laws led to the arrest of women's right's advocate, and the first woman to run for president, Victoria Woodhull. Progress in proper birth control, sexually transmitted disease prevention and treatment, and abortion rights were set back almost a hundred years.
