Wildland Firefighting Education: Peanut Pie Fire Enterprises

Our USA forests provide numerous benefits to our Eco-system. Montana is noted for its world class forestry school at the University of Montana, Missoula. The University of Montana offers various programs including wildlife management and related forest Eco-system programs. Recently, my son wanted a chance to participate in a forestry related boot camp offered by Jim Maher owner of Peanut Pie Fire Enterprises in Basin, Montana.

Peanut Pie Fire Enterprises is a private company sanctioned by the federal government and offers an intensive four-day boot camp in wildfire fighting and education. The four day course involves the basics of wildfire management, written instruction and field work in the scenic forest area of Basin, Montana. The cost of the intensive course is approximately $250 plus gear.

The Peanut Pie Fire expert team of trainers work with young adults with the goal of obtaining a "Red Card" which allows the graduates to be hired for wildfires throughout the United States. In addition, the recruits are required to pass a very tough, on-line FEMA objective test while in camp.

The trainees sleep in a bunkhouse, work all day and the Peanut Pie Fire staff provide excellent food and snacks during the training period. Trainees from around the country attended the training camp with my son Derek during the June 12 through June 15 period. Work was hard, but very rewarding. At the end, my son received his "Red Card" and passed the FEMA test. There was never any doubt , once he puts his mind to something.

Derek had a natural inclination toward forest management because he grew up helping out on Grandpa Andy Anderson's 160-acre homestead loaded with healthy trees. In the past years since his grandfather's passing at the age of 96, Derek has helped maintain the healthy forest on the homestead which will eventually be his. Cleaning out the dead limbs, trees and clearing debris from the cabin area is key to preventing forest fires.
