A little over three years ago, my son, at that time age 10, began complaining of his right hip and upper leg hurting. He said it bothered him a lot whether he was walking, running, standing, sitting or laying down. I dismissed it as growing pains. Over the course of a three week period he continued to complain. I didn't really think much of it and gave him pain medicine. During the third week when I noticed he was walking with a limp, a warning siren went off in my head that something definitely wasn't right.

I immediately made an appointment with the doctor we went to. This doctor had only been practicing in our town for about a year and was brand new to the medical profession. I really liked him though and hoped that his medical expertise was as wonderful as his personality. The day I took my son to see the doctor, I explained to him when he had begun complaining and how he had described his pain. I told him about the limp. He asked if my son had fallen or been in any other kind of accident. The answer to both was no. The doctor said he wanted to have x-rays taken of the hip area. After he looked at the x-rays he told me he was pretty certain what the problem was, and it wasn't anything too pleasant. He said to be 100% positive my son would need to have an MRI done.

I know what you went through. My daughter has Legg Calve Perthes, Girls also get it as well. She spent a yr in an abduction brace at age 4. She is now 13 and it starting to have problems again ( we have an appt next week). You should also know that it can be hereditary. Our other daughter is 3 and we are taking her when she turns 4 to have her hips checked to make sure she doesnt have it. I also have found out that children can have it in one hip, go through treatment, and then develop it on the other hip. So as you said, PLEASE, if your child complains of knee pain, dont let a doctor tell you as they did us, that it was "growing pain".

Oh, your poor son. There was no way you could have known what was wrong. Your article is very informative. I have never heard of this before. I can imagine being a nervous wreck, actually been there, done that. What a great hospital to work with you the way they did.

Hi Carol. I surely hope that the preschool kid doesn't have this problem. It's most common in boys his age though. If it turns out that he does have legg calve perthest, please let his parents know that there are organizations out there to help with the cost. Lucy, that is horrible that the kid has it in both legs. It happens but is not very common. Instead of fundraisers please let the child's parents know about the organization I mentioned in my article. There are several programs out there that will help with the full financial cost. Thank you for saying I did a great job and thanks for being glad my son has recovered. Charlotte, I am not sure what your friend's problem was but as far as I know, legg calve perthes disease only occurs in boys. I am really sorry that she went through what she did though. Thanks for hoping my son will have a better life.

I had a friend who had this problem. They tried to fix it after she was grown up but they botched everything and she ended up in even more pain. She withdrew from the world and all of her friends. It was heart wrenching. I'm so glad that you all discovered the problem earlier, although I know the pain was still excruiating. Hopefully, your son will have a much better life.

A boy in our community has this in both legs. There have been several fundraisers for his expenses. It is good to know that recovery is possible! You did a great job writing this - I could really feel your emotion when you talked about how much pain your son was in. I'm so glad that your son has recovered!

How heart wrenching. I'm glad your son came through okay though I wish they could have done more to alleviate the pain for him. I know someone whose preschooler has been having leg pain. I will send her this article.

Wow, I'm so sorry your son had to go through this. I'm sorry your whole family had to go through this. Poor kid. I know how hard it must have been to watch your son go through all of this pain. I'm glad he's better now and I'm also glad you wrote this article because even though I don't have any children I do have a niece and nephew who might go through something like this. This is a great article for mothers to read so they can be aware that this disease exists and to watch their children for any symptoms. :)
