When I saw The Producers, it was the traveling show, not Broadway. I found that  the play was amusing and entertaining. I was imagining the whole I time I watched the play, how much funnier it would be with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

I was excited to see the movie because I am a big fan of both actors. Within the first five minutes of watching the movie I had this feeling of dread, because I knew I had two more hours to go. I thought to myself "Well, the play took a few minutes before it started rolling."

The problem with the movie version is that the humor didn't translate well onto the big screen. It seemed the director added more physical slapstick, insteading of concentrating on the hidden jokes that Mel Brooks is famous for. I have read reviews saying that Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick had a lot chemistry.

To say these two had chemistry in the movie is to say Cheaper By the Dozen 2 is an intellectual thriller. I had a hard time digesting Broderick's  over-acting,and to keep in mind the days of Ferris Bueller, so that I won't lose ALL respect for him.

Uma Thurman as Ulla? Come on now! It's hard to picture someone who was seeking revenge and taking names last year, as the ditzy swedish secretary who falls for Broderick's character. Nathan Lane did the best he could do(he always does) with what he was given.

The only true comic relief came from the overtly gay director, Roger De Bris, played by the wonderful Gary Beach. With all of that being said, there were a few chuckles, but the overall product was very dissappointing.

I am still apologizing to my boyfriend for dragging him to see that. I had convinced him that not all musicals are bad after seeing Chicago and Rent, but The Producers set him back a notch.

If only I had just waited for it to come to the Hippodrome again.
